My earliest relative Jan Teunisen came to this country on a 4 year term of employment as a carpenter in the Manor of Rensselaerswyck in 1641 which I believe is very near or now part of Albany so who knows. Eventually settled and helped found the community of Minisink in Orange County New York. The Dutch part of my family were pretty prominent up until the end of the 19th century, there was family that fought on both sides of the Revolution some ending up in Canada but that didn't last long as just one generation later I guess a 'cousin' became one of the great traitors in Canadian history during the War of 1812. Now that's an American patriot!
My mom did all this genealogy stuff 15+ years ago and visited all the sites, I love learning history and putting a personal connection on it makes it really fascinating stuff. Any Westbrook's or Decker's in your family?

Any Westbrook's or Decker's in your family?It does seem to make history come alive,especially of you find the cemeteries and even some of the houses your ancestors lived and buried at.Find a grave is a good site for that.It would be a good project for kids to do in history class.Some of my first ancestors were really nasty to the native people.
King Phillips war.Then some of the others intermarried the natives further South.No Westbrook or Decker that I can find.Some names are Freer,Tietsoort,Van Deusen and they married into the English eventually starting with the name Corbin,but they were originally French Huegenots.If you can find any ties to Clement Corbin you've got it made,it will take you right across the pond and all over Europe.He married Dorcas Buckmaster(Buckminster).She was an indentured servant,he was not.A true American marriage that wouldn't have happened in Europe.She would have been considered low born and he had titled family in the old country.

lol I thought this was a hoot when it came out.Some Natives got sort of ticked,but hey,facial reconstruction is what it is and he does resemble Patrick Stewart.
