That is the fundamental freedom in a modern society everyone should have.

And not only for atheists is this freedom necessary. Those of us who believe need to be free from beliefs we don't hold to.
And yes, I very much respect atheists right to be free from any and all religion - even mine.

Definitely. The statement 'Freedom of Religion' is taken by some really violently ignorant people to say that Atheists should not get protection as they identify as 'non-religious' and the only way they would be included is to admit they are followers of a religion ( yawns) . Utter garbage. Freedom of and from religion should be the mantra

For example, Dennis Miller has nothing but praise for the Tea Party, but Penn Jillette can not stand them because of their opinions on Atheism. I happen to agree with Mr. Jillette on this circumstance. America is not a Christian nation because of one line in the Bill of Rights that prevents from becoming one.
I think it needs repeating.

We actually were founded on Judeo-Christian Values, if you look at history rather that quoting things out of context.
Exactly, the "Christian nation" thing doesn't necessarily mean that society should be a theocracy, but that Christian values were the basis for which the laws were made on.

Boy are you out of context.
What the First Amendment actually reads:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Government is also not allowed to persecute a religion either, it is freedom of religion not freedom from religion.
But has the Government persecuted the religious more than those who are atheists?

Agreed as much as Atheists would like to lead people to believe that our founding fathers were atheists, that actually is not true. The majority of our Founding Fathers were very religious some of them were actually pastors for goodness sakes.

Yeah, that is true and I would say these days it is the left and the Atheists that are the ones responsible for persecuting religious people.

Okay, I'm fine with that as long as you leave me alone with my religious celebrations, etc. For starters the fight against Christmas is rather out of line. I mean seriously, what does that holiday do to offend atheists anyways?

Why do you blame Atheists for that? Do you have any real basis? The only people I have heard complaining about Christmas are fundamentalist Muslims and some extreme Christian sects
I am an Atheist, and I tell people Merry Christmas, and I buy my family and select friends presents. Never has it occurred to me that Christmas is being forced down my throat, participation is entirely by choice. I have always liked Christmas, as the one time of the year I see most of my family

Well you really haven't been paying much attention, O'Reilly has been following this over at Fox News (normally around December), and when I have backchecked to see if he is telling the truth I found that it was not only true, but it was also Atheists or Atheist Groups behind the suits.

If there are Atheists doing this they are very misguided. In any case Christmas is barely religious to most people

Yeah seriously, O'Reilly is a joke. And I wouldn't say misguided, more like overzealous. I am also an atheist who says "Merry Christmas" and I think it's pathetic how militant atheists have such a stalkerish obsession with being anti-religion. And yes most religious people aren't really that religious and it has more to do with the fact that they've been raised on it and are religious by default.

Fast-forward one-hundred years to 1978. The Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF) was incorporated in Wisconsin. It is a national organization of "atheists, agnostics and skeptics of any pedigree." Of the 16,000 members of FFRF, 500 are Coloradoans.

Its two-fold goal is to defend separation of church and state and to educate the populace about "nontheism."

What do they do besides put up billboards in Denver?

These are a few things: "Files lawsuits! Publishes the only freethought newspaper in the United States, Freethought Today. Promotes freedom from religion with educational products..."

This same group has filed in court against Colorado's Day of Prayer. Recently they appealed their failed court challenge.

It is interesting that this organization is heavily involved with lawsuits.

In contrast, during the first one-hundred years of the US Constitution, lawsuits against the prevailing Christian practices of days of thanksgiving, chaplaincy or Sunday laws were rare. The prevailing ethos was pro-Protestant. And the laws reflected that ethos.

Today there is no prevailing Protestant ethos. At this rate, the FFRF may become more successful in the future. Perhaps they will follow their predecessors and push to remove church tax-exemptions and the military chaplaincy.

http://www.examiner.com/christian-apolo ... nder=print

I'm not going to go into a list of every single organization, but it does happen.

Well, I agree with them that one should be allowed 'Freedom From Religion' but the kind of activism they endorse is very petty

Ah, that explains it  Even the Atheists of the Mid-west are nutters apparently

They made a good job describing the FFRF in the part you quoted.

It went downhill from there.

Lawsuits. Of course they do lawsuits, and they are entitled to when certain parts of the government fail to respect the freedom of religion parts of the constitution or the ammendments and whathever. The FFRF will issue lawsuits whenever the state is caught breaking this freedom by using tax payer money to promote it. That includes pushing the "In god we trust" motto.

They didn't mention what the "anti-christmas" banners were:
Image

"Reasons greetings" is not an anti-christmas banner, it is an anti-religion banner. Atheist groups are completely entitled to make those banners, just like religious organizations are entitled to make banners promoting their BS. Unlike your original assumption, the FFRF are not issuing lawsuits against the use of the word Christmas, or anything like that. They do use Reason's greetings as a motto for their religious choice.

The one lawsuit that is mentioned in that "article", is not one that has anything to do with christmas, but one against the Colorado day of mandatory prayer - which is state-sponsored religion, and that is against the constitution. Of course, since for some absolutely broken reason they didn't win the lawsuit (a sign of how little the current authorities respect the constitution in contrast to how they love pandering to the Christian majority for votes - they would appeal the court it.

Actually you can't argue that, because it can also apply for people of other Religions as far as prayer.

Mandatory prayer is discrimination against atheists and religions in which prayer is not a permitted thing to do in public (or to be done at all).

The FFRF issues lawsuits to protect against discrimination against atheists. Because, you know, they are the one group that gets discriminated the most against.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discrimina ... t_atheists

If any of those kinds of discrimination were applied against Christians, the xtians would cry in horror and demand a holy war. Atheists on the other hand, just look for court results, and lose and get bashed for hating christmas after doing so.

Left the Democratic party for being anti-religious, huh?
I am a Democrat, and a practicing Lutheran. I don't see any clash of ideals. Sure, sometimes the left might have gone overboard from time to time defending separation of church and state, but I tend to think these examples are few and far between, and often exaggerated.
