You don't really understand the American Culture Wars. The conservative notion of elitism has little to do with wealth and much to do with being "overly educated". The educated lower-class, i.e. struggling bohemian artsy-fartsy types, are considered lower class elitists. Meanwhile wealthy people like Ronald Reagon and George W. Bush are not elitist because they can do the "down-to-earth folksy charm" act. So conservative anti-elitism should be more correctly called anti-intellectualism.

I find it ironic that Joe Biden and George W. Bush have been called "Men most Americans could have a beer with" given that they're both teetotallers.

Ironically enough, the politician most Canadians would like to have a beer with was a bicycling professor.

U mad, Marshall? Are you trying to hurt my feelings or something? I'm not your enemy here, I hope you know that. I take the approach that PPR is like a boxing ring, we touch gloves and try our damnedest to beat each other up in here, but outside the ropes we shake hands and no hard feelings. That being said, you seem to want to do this bare-knuckle, so...

Did it ever occur to you that maybe he created this thread because he passionately dislikes the condescension displayed by people like Herman Cain, as demonstrated in the posted advertisement? The message seems to be that black men who vote for Democrats are lazy, gambling addicted, wife cheating, welfare abusing losers. It's quite clear a lot of members here share a similar passionate dislike for Obama and even you jumped on that band-wagon. It goes both ways.

Personally, Herman Cain is a non-entity as far as I'm concerned, just another sideshow in the farce that's been the GOP field up to this point. That is certainly one of the more tone-deaf and embarrassing political ads I've heard in a while, but as I don't take Herman Cain seriously in the first place it doesn't have much relevancy to me. I can and have argued about the wisdom of black voters' blind loyalty to the Democratic party and how they de facto disfranchise themselves by doing so, as the Democrats know they don't have to actually do anything for them and the Republicans don't see any point in courting them, but Cain's ad certainly isn't the right way to try and address that.

As to Obama, I don't hate the man, I'm just extremely disappointed in him. Recall that I voted for him on the idea that he would dial down the loss of civil liberties and encroachment of executive power we saw under W by at least a little bit, and he's not only failed to deliver there but has actively increased those very things. At the very least I didn't expect him to start assassinating American citizens and unilaterally starting another war without even consulting Congress, let alone anyone else. I may not have expected much from him as a president, but I certainly didn't expect what we got.

Neither Herman Cain nor Barrack Obama are really the issue here though, I only jumped in because I facepalmed on seeing the thread title, and by the time I got to it had already devolved to the usual partisan pissing match between the usual suspects. M_P can't say I haven't tried to steer him away from tired catch-phrases and slogans, in fact he can't even say I've really singled him out in that regard as I've jumped many people for inane plays on Obama's name, using the term "teabaggers", and other such stupidities on numerous occasions. Further, considering the number of unprovoked attacks M_P has launched at me personally among others, he really doesn't have much room to complain, and certainly doesn't need your help to defend himself. Given that you've strode so unerringly in his footsteps in trying to get under my skin (false equivalencies, trying to pigeonhole me, attacking my individuality as a pose, etc), perhaps you like playing Robin to him, who's to say.

Looking at the context of your posts, as compared with the context of hundreds of other internet posters I've encountered over the years who use a similar style of discourse when they are trying to inflate themselves in a debate, it wasn't an unreasonable assumption for me to make. There is no other explanation for the faux-nonchalant "I really don't have time to be fighting over the internet with the likes of you, but you know what, I'm going to anyway" routine.

Really, "no other explanation"? How about a hard won self awareness about the relative unimportance of "winning" internet debates and thus an unwillingness to devote large amounts of time and energy to said task? There's nothing fake about my nonchalance, I've just learned to put what other people are saying on the internet into perspective, and to allocate my personal resources accordingly. There are so many other things I could be doing besides participating in this forum that are more beneficial to me personally that I have to prioritize; this is a hobby that I pursue for my own enjoyment, not a job or higher calling. That you can't see it any other way really says more about you it does about me, specifically your inability to see other people's points of view without applying your own filters. You have plenty of sympathy, perhaps too much judging by how it seems to physically pain you, but your empathy is highly selective, to say the least. I'll be coming back to this again, don't worry.

Quote:
I don't envy your job or the fact that you have a wife (I don't intend to marry), but that is a rather clever trick you pull in trying to accuse me of such.

Not so fast sport, that's not what I said at all. I said you have an inferiority complex, not that you're envious, there's a rather large difference between the two. I'm not going to go digging through your posts looking for all the times you've done it, but you have a real pattern of misinterpreting other people's statements of good fortune and/or accomplishments as attacks on you and others for lacking same. I suspect it's that selective empathy again, you misinterpret what people are saying as bragging because that's your personal bias, to you someone lauding their own good fortune or accomplishment must be bragging because you can't conceive of another reason for them to do so. That doesn't make it the only possible explanation, only the only possible explanation to you.

Quote:
Your claims to superior logic and debate prowess annoy me because you fail to back them up. You're obviously one of the better writers here. You're more articulate than 99% of people. However, you've made all kinds of logically flawed arguments.

Who's the 1% who're more articulate?

Seriously though, if you want to say that I make logically fallacious arguments and fail to back up my own claims, you do need to provide examples, not just say so. Not to put too fine a point on it, but you're not exactly qualified to judge such things. Your personal record here is not good, you make emotional arguments and then try to defend them by invoking how strongly *you* feel about them rather than supporting reasoning, and just lately tried to argue that your personal willingness to resort to violence should somehow lend logical credence to your opinions. You like to generalize about people you don't like, argue that stereotypes that you agree with must have a grain of truth to them because lots of people think so, often resort to personal attack and profanity, etc. Do you really need me to go on? Do YOU normally take advice from people who've repeatedly demonstrated their lack of comprehension in the area in which they're offering said advice?

I've never claimed perfection, in fact you'll notice that I litter my posts with qualifiers such as "I think", "it would seem", "to the best of my knowledge", etc. This is because I make a point of acknowledging where I'm not certain, and take great pains not to misrepresent what I think as what I know. I've also made a point of acknowledging when I've made mistakes, or more unusually, where I've changed my opinion due to new information or further reflection. Real egomaniac stuff, right?

But that's all moot because I'm just skating by on my good writing skills, right?

Quote:
You mean me reacting to Fnord basically telling a bunch of people "I've had a harder life than anyone here and look what I've accomplished. Therefore you don't have the right to ever feel depressed or complain about anything". I don't have a problem with people who have a positive self-image. I have a problem with people who see fit to judge others for not being exactly like them. That IS arrogant.

Really Marshall, you have a problem with people who judge other people? Look in the mirror; without the harsh personal judgement most of your posts would be reduced to profanity and the head-banging and rolling eyes emotes. Fnord was referencing his personal experience of being homeless and struggling in order to explain why he holds a certain opinion, this is pretty basic establishing credibility stuff. I've seen you reference your education before you address someone's opinion on climate matters in order to establish your credibility in the subject, it's the same exact thing only you're not being self aware enough to see it. Again, selective empathy won't allow you to see how someone else's life experience might lead them to hold a different opinion than you do absent some sort of malice or personality flaw. I'll remind you of another incident with Fnord where he described his charitable work and you went on the attack because you felt he was "bragging" about it and therefore trying to make other people (you) feel bad. Classic inferiority complex, textbook even.

Quote:
If you're not intentionally cocky, maybe you should work on your style.

Again, why would I think you're at all qualified to make that judgment? I honestly don't think you *can* tell confidence from arrogance, and I certainly don't trust your judgment in this particular forum where you can't seem to control your own emotions, let alone read mine.

Same thing with Obama when they questioned if he was "black enough". Cain's black-ness is not in serious question. The issue is whether the Republicans can seriously run a black candidate, especially against a black democrat. It's a serious risk on their part. There are still racists in this country, and they're overwhelmingly registered Republicans. I think by playing racial politics Republicans can only lose more than they can gain.

You seem to just not get it.

If Herman Cain is the best candidate in Republicans' minds, then we will nominate him. We quite frankly don't care what color of skin pigmentation our nominee is. That is what seperates us from Democrats, we're not obsessed over race.

First of all, what a load of blatantly false self-righteous crap. Secondly, as usual, you're completely missing the point. This isn't about race, at all. I mean, on the surface it is, but the decision isn't about race at all, it's about politics. Get it? No, of course not.

Reflecting on how opinions generally go around here, how are 'country club' and 'conservative' not redundant?

What does skin pigmentation have to do with politics, aside from the fact it would destroy the left's song and dance routine about the right being racist.

That's a good point. Let me call up Webster's and tell them to remove the word "demographics" from their dictionary, since Inuyasha says it's not a real thing.

Black Republicans really do have a tough time of it, google "the Clarence Thomas Rule" some time to see the racists of the left decloaking to call into question the intelligence and/or integrity of any minority who doesn't vote Democrat. It's pretty embarrassing stuff.

During and after the '08 elections I had liberals tell me and others that we were racist since we didn't vote for Obama. They based it on race alone without the democrat vs. republican thing even coming into play.
Now we have a black republican that I will vote for if he makes it that far so now they say "Ummm, well. this is different".

What a load of s**t.

That's the view I take. I love a good fight, more so if the opponent is skilled (in this case I would mean, knowledgeable, persuasive, intellectually honest...).

Looks like Cain mopped up Perry's drop in the polls.
Real Clear Republican poll averages

It is funny as Hell Mitt actually declined in the polls as he took the lead.
Cain's line mirrors Perry's
The republicans search for the messiah?

Herman Cain is media creation and not a serious candidate. He only raise $2 million last quarter, has no real campaign staff, and has suspended campaigning for the next month. His numbers will fall back down.
