Even if Lebanon had gone for department (i.e. full integration) status?

Well...I am sure that Paris' culture is a bit different than Lyon's or Marseille's....let alone farther territories. Well, probably some things in culture would be changed for the better like some more secularism.

but things like languages, music, religions..... those would have remained.

I'll be interested to see what happens with Mayotte. Mayotte was a very Muslim, non-French speaking French overseas collectivity that recently voted for full integration with France.

Well, Christian parents in Lebanon usually speak French to their toddlers before introducing them to Arabic, Muslim parents are the opposite. Armenians start with Armenian, Kurds with Kurdish...

One of the cultural things that would change in French Lebanon is the priority of Language, making the French the first language over the others in its communities, I personally wouldn't mind that.

Could you see Lebanon becoming a French département in the future?

Not any more than I could see Cyprus becoming part of the UK, no.

With all this hezbollah/Ba'ath friends presence and a Maronite puppet Patriarch, and decline of Christian population and more Chrisitan lands being bought by hezbollah (by proxy thro its chrisitian allies,/ ha! ironically this is a Zioniste strategy) .

No, it's too late I am afraid.

An Iran's departement is more likely, how fun.

Reminds me of an idle moment in the public library once.

I was flipping through a thick historic atlas of World War One.

The final chapters depicted the diplomatic ranglings at the end of the war.

The book mapped out how the old Ottoman Empire was to be divied up by the victorious allies-largely TO- the victorius allies.

Saudi Arabia, and "Transjordan" going to Arab ruling clans.

Palestine, Egypt, and Iraq going becoming mandates of the British Empire.

Lebananon (and I believe Syria) going to France. All the shapes on the map prefiguring the modern arab republics of the Mideast, and what was to become Israel.

But the map also showed Armenia as a seperate entitiy from Turkey, and it showed it also as a "mandate" of one of the western powers. That Western power being: the United States!

I guess the idea never went through, but apparently the predominantly Christian Armenians were supposed to have their own seperate republic from Turkey. And it was to be a client state of the USA ( like the Phillipines or Puerto Rico, or like Lebanon was to France).

Dont know if that wouldve helped, or hurt, either the USA or Armenia, but a parrelell Universe in which the USA had an imperial presence Just north of Iraq, and just west of Iran, and right next to Soviet Russia, is mind boggling to comprehend. It wouldve made the mideast stew even more hot and spicy than it is!

Yes, I think Lebanon's independence was a big mistake.

Yes, that's true, we should have convert to a French territory instead, like the Guadalupe Island.

We were so close, but noooo, nationalists ruined it all. They wanted a 'free' Lebanon.

We would be French citizens by now, and part of the EU too, we would have the EURO currency instead of our dollarized Lira. French social security, French economy and most importantly French national security.

No one of our neighbors would dare to screw with us because France would f**k them. The Israeli jets wouldn't dare to fly in our skies, the Syrian tanks wouldn't dare to violate our borders, Hezbollah wouldn't have been even created by Iran, and the Baath's Lebanese dogs wouldn't wield any power, that if they would ever exist in the French Lebanon.

You're kidding right, you do realize France's reputation from a military standpoint is a joke. They are the only country in the world to lose two wars to Italy, They have a reputation for running away like cowards. gross incompetitence, charging in like morons thinking it will be a glorious charge (Hundred Years War they tended to be wiped out by armies that were about 1/10th the French fighting strength), or continually making the same mistakes in combat again and again.

In all honesty I think the Canadian military could beat the snot out of the entire French military. Granted the current French Prime Minister has improved their reputation somewhat, but still you guys would have been invaded by another country anyways....

You're the one who's probably kidding.

I know that the French soldiers don't usually sound the manliest men (their language is very....feminized-sounded) but Napoleon wouldn't have invaded half of Europe just by himself. I think you're wrong, the French had proved many times over and over in history to be fierce fighters since they were Gauls.

France itself has a sh***y geographical location, it was all surrounded by enemies wanting to swallow its lands, the French wouldn't survive if they were what you're describing them.

Inuyasha is not kidding, he is simply wrong and grossly uninformed about French military history

I'm commenting partially on the idiocy of French Commanders, Napoleon was not of French ancestory he tended to learn from his mistakes fairly rapidly, the French usually have a tendency to make the same mistake over and over.

It was seen in the 100 year war, was also seen in World War I and World War II.

Oh, I get it it is a racist argument. The french people are genetically unable to win wars?
Just give it up. Your are making an ass of yourself.
The french have a huge military -not ret*d huge like ours- but inappropriately big.
They are also a Nuclear power so I am pretty sure if Lebanon were a department of France
Israel would not have gone to war with them.<-this is a period.

The fall of the Turkish empire was the best thing ever happened for the region probably since the fall of the Hittites (ironically, who were also the ancestors of the turks/ottman too), the Ottoman rule was cancer, only takes and never gives in return, 300-400 years of such state.
All countries who have been under their rule have been left out too deprived, that's probably why the modern Turkey is way more advanced socially, in wealth and technology than most countries in the area (except Iran and Israel who were never really been under the Ottoman rule).

That's also probably why Greece was behind the other European countries.

I get the impression Inuyasha is still on the Freedom Toast bandwagon in blatantly ignoring the vast amounts of free information available about French history and instead just making generic claims based on the (mostly) American meme of rubbing it in France's face that they needed to be rescued. Of course, it is perhaps not well remembered anymore but during both World Wars many American soldiers were known to chant "Lafayette!" when civilians decided to come out and celebrate their liberation. Lafayette of course being the famous Frenchman who played a part in the American Revolution. It was thus seen as a debt being paid, or a favor returned. It disgusts me that many Americans can insult French history when the truth is France is one of the best friends the United States has and is one of the best countries in the world, its military also one of the best with a long history of great élan. And of course being a nuclear power and a space power they are pretty well untouchable

Might be why the whole Balkan peninsula lagged behind even Eastern Europe (even Poland and the Czech Republic were more advanced than the huge area that was once ruled by the Ottomans- Slovakia, Romania, Yugoslavia, Albania, Bulgaria.

Okay I'm going to break this down for people:

Hundred Years war, they continually made the same mistake over and over of charging into hailstorm of arrows from longbows. In one situation they got beat by an army that they outnumbered 10 to 1.

World War 2: The Germans followed the same invasion path that they did in World War I.
