I am not obese, and would like to see the stats on what age group the most obese people are in...it might not even be 'this' generation that is the most overweight...also though if the FDA wasn't crap perhaps they would actually regulate food for quality and try to get people to quit eating unhealthy crap which might help the obesity problem. I highly doubt getting the munchies from smoking pot is going to increase the obesity problem though I have to admit I have not seen a lot of severely obese cannabis users...some aren't exactly skinny but skinny isn't healthy per say anyways.

legalizing cannabis will help with people not being jailed/fined and what not for smoking a joint which is a good thing...though not for the people who make money off of prisons perhaps.

Thinking that most people on government assistance just want free money is assuming that people would voluntarily live a life of squalor in a sh*t neighborhood to be crapped on by the rest of society just to avoid a little work.
A new WalMart opened up not too far away, and almost 10,000 people showed up to fight over 600 minimum wage, no benefit jobs. I'm sure all of them were just pretending to look for work and are really just so happy that they get to sit around and collect government benefits.

This does not change human nature.

As I asserted earlier, when social programs are offered, then people will examine every angle to get the easy money, and go through the contortions I mentioned previously.

You say these programs "pay squat" but you are missing the full picture. I know people who "day trade" stocks and have their stock portfolio in their divorced spouse's name, while they sit at home, collect maybe three different welfare programs for the "poor".

I know someone who runs a wood working business from home while collecting disability and truly has a back injury.

You can collect social security disability your whole life - which is why they are so appealing.

People get the disability and earn money on the side doing what they can.

The first example you provide sounds like a good old case of fraud....and again how does that reflect most people on welfare? If someone who does not need welfare money is collecting it then they are committing fraud. Maybe some people get on disability and earn some on the side....it actually is pefectly allowed for someone on disability to make limited amounts of income outside disability like a certain amount of hours of work and someone could still be on disability and if a family member or friend gives them money as a gift that is fine. But yeah if someone is able to do full time amounts of work they should not be on disability otherwise they are just taking disability money that someone might actually need.

I don't see what is so appealing about being on disability....its really not much in the way of income at all. At most I can get around 700 a month right now its 450 with my food stamps having been cut to 20 dollars I can't even move out let alone pay my mom rent like she wants me to start doing with that and still afford anything else. Sure disability might be appealing if you're good at conning the system and can bring in some more money that way...but yeah you can actually make a living wage if you work depending on the job/pay I suppose.

Sweetleaf-

Thank you for your sound defense of those in need. My wife collects disability, as does our austistic daughter, and it's hardly enough to get by on. When I have been lucky enough to find work, it should be pointed out that my wife's housing benefits were reduced in accordance to my meager income I had been bringing in at the time.

It is not fraud to change one's martial status, and paper assets to qualify for welfare.

It is you that believes there is a hidden political message. I merely cited evidence based on a question asked, and somehow your mind generates the belief that such evidence must be stated to support a statement about welfare.

Your personal feelings about welfare does not change how it actually works.

It is about whether you qualify or not. Not whether you need it.

I never said it was appealing.
I never said 700/month was a lot.

I cited observations, and researched facts in response to questions that were asked of me. You seem unwilling to accept the welfare system as it works. Like, you are in denial.

If I say the temperature of the Sun is 5,778 K, then I don't have a hidden political message that "the sun is too hot, so we need to do something". I merely citing researched information about the Sun.

This is a trait of some ASD people to not have "hidden messages' in their discourse.

I consume information about 10-12 hours per day. I read many different kinds of information. I graduated college with 350 credits (~ the equivalent of 3 undergraduate degrees).

And what are you on about me thinking there is some hidden political message in your posts? I do not recall saying anything like that...if you can find a quote where I've implied any of that go for it.

It is fraud to lie about martial status and be getting money in someone elses name so disability doesn't find out you are making too much side money...which it sounds like you where describing but perhaps I am misunderstanding what you mean.

I did not suggest my personal feelings have any effect on how SSI works, by need...I mean people who are disabled and qualify for disability..... Also though at least SSI is somewhat need based not only do you have to be disabled but you have to have not held a job and paid into the system and you cannot have more than a certain amount of financial assests so it is somewhat need based actually. SSDI works a bit differently....either way when people are on disability fraudulently then they are likely taking away resources from people who need it...how does pointing that out suggest I was implying my personal feelings have anything to do with how it actually works?

Also what am I not accepting about how the welfare system works? I am on welfare...I think I probably know a bit about how the welfare programs I am on work less knowledgable about the ones I am not on...I do read the information they send me. I have only suggested people do commit fraud, some of your examples provided in this thread sound a lot like fraud and frauds take away money that could be going to people who actually need it..none of that really even has much to do specifically with how it works, more how it can be abused and that it hurts people who need the help those programs provide. So what am I denying about how welfare works?....quit trying to make this personal, I have not suggested I think you have hidden political messeges in your posts either you're projecting or think you somehow have the ability to read minds of people over the internet...where did your mind come up with the belief I think there are hidden political messages in your posts?

Ok. I am corrected. however, I did not mean it in the same sense you do. It is appealing to people who don't need it.

Whereas you think of it in the sense of people who need it. I agree with you that it is not that "appealing" to these people.

The "day trader" person I previously mentioned does not need it, but it makes life more enjoyable to have money coming in, so it is appealing.

You asked, "how does that reflect most people on welfare?".

My original assertion was that people change their behavior to fit social programs.

Your responses imply that I am making some statement about welfare. I am only noting how the system works.

I said I know people who divorce to qualify for social security. This is not fraud.

My brother's girlfriend with child purposely does not get married, so she can keep getting welfare. This is not fraud.

It is not fraud to change your martial status legally, change your address legally and change your lifestyle to qualify for welfare programs.

You have huge responses that never address my original point that people change their behavior because of social welfare. Someone even posted to you, "thanks for defending those in need".

I present information about the system works then you "defend people in need" which comes across as denial of how the system works.

Alright I can see how it is appealing for people who don't need it if they can get it, since it is free money...less appealing for people who actually need the help due to not being able to come up with money elsewhere.

Also when I said need, I figured that they qualify was implied.....what I mean by need is they qualify, should have said if someone doesn't qualify and are getting benefits its fraud. You're right it doesn't specifically have to do with how much someone 'needs' it but more if they qualify though I imagine most people who qualify do need the help....some people who need it might end up denied and not getting help. But was not suggesting any of my personal feelings have any effect on how the system works I guess my phrasing could have been more clear.

Also It seemed you where implying the majority of people on welfare are just playing the system and taking advantage but don't really need the welfare programs...so I challenged that idea since I don't think that actually reflects the majority of people on welfare. I guess I missed the part where you specifically said people change their behavior to fit social welfare programs......perhaps some people do that. I can only speak for myself though I haven't changed my behavior to fit social welfare programs just so happens I qualify and have been approved, why would someone who qualifies need to adjust their behavior because of social welfare? Seems like that would more apply to people who are actually playing the system and would need to put on somewhat of an 'act' to be approved.

I don't see how pointing out frauds, fakes, exagerattors who get on welfare but shouldn't qualify or don't even need the help...takes resources from people who have more of a need for it...denies anything. I am not claiming all people who need welfare get it, or that they base it solely on need....especially with disability its qualifying regardless of how much you 'need' it. However a lot of welfare programs are some what need based even if not entirely.
