If you say a church should not have tax exempt status, then what is the criteria that a non-profit must have to receive tax-exempt status? There are atheist organizations that have tax-exempt status that don't do any more charitable work than an average church. Should they lose their tax exempt status? These organizations are tax-exempt not necessarily because the government is trying to subsidize what they do, but because they operate as a non-profit. They rely on donations instead of selling a product or service.

Sure, why the hell not?

So do you think all non-profits should be taxed no matter what?

As I posted earlier in the thread, churches - and other organizations - should be taxed, but the IRS should take into account the wealth of such entities, as is done with individuals. For instance, poor people don't pay income tax; same would apply to small churches, or other organizations.

Maybe because there isn't a profit to tax. However, Kenneth Copeland seems to have to lose a thumping great profit somewhere. I wonder how much tax on personal income he pays.

This is the problem with taxing non-profits. A donor to the organization has already paid tax on the money they are donating, but now the money is going to be taxed again and is going to the government instead of the intended purpose.
I will use a hypothetical situation to explain:
Say there is an organization called Citizens Against War that I really like. I decide I want to donate 5000 to them. Lets say that 1000 of that donation goes toward taxes and goes to the government. Lets say that 50% of that money went to fund the Department of Defense. That means I was donating to an anti-war organization, but 10% of my donation went to fund a war.

Not necessarily. Donations to many such organizations are deductible.

So what? If you pay someone $5,000 to do some work for you, then they pay taxes on that money even though you already paid taxes on it yourself.

Why do you think that non-profits should be any different?

But the work is still getting done, so your money is still going to what you intended it to go to. When you purchase a product or service it has taxes added into it, and you know how much of what you are paying is tax. A non-profit can't add tax to someone's donation.

You are confusing different types of taxes.

In a sales tax, one type of consumption tax, the tax is usually charged separately from the item. In a VAT, another type of consumption tax, the tax is built into the cost of the item and is not a separate line item charge.

For property taxes, the tax is typically based on a percentage of the value of the property and is separate.

For income taxes, the taxes are taken out of the amount received.

So the notion that "non-profit can't add tax to someone's donation" is meaningless. If a non-profit were to pay taxes on their revenue, the amount of taxes would be taken out of that revenue.

Businesses don't pay income tax on revenue. They pay taxes on profit, which by definition a non-profit would not have. Therefore there is nothing to tax as far as that goes. It would still be possible for them to pay property taxes. I guess as far as that goes it would just be a matter of opinion whether they should or not. I feel like less people would donate money if they knew a large percentage of their donation was going to the government.

Not quite. They pay taxes on revenue minus deductible expenses and tax credits. It wouldn't be at all difficult to devise very similar criteria for non-profits.

I was personally aware of some of the abuse but seeing the larger picture shows how widespread the abuse within our systems are and sure opened my eyes as well.

If the tax payers knew how badly the systems we live under was screwing honest people, we would have a tax revolt to straighten out these areas of abuse.

The thieves would have to carry their own tax burden instead of you and I subsidising their thefts.
