...You're like 1&1/2 years younger than I , KK ?
I am old enough that I touched onto my parents' concern about what to do when the draft manifested itself (Tho it ended when I was 13 or so) ~ I do remember , when I was 12 or so , overhearing my folks + my aunt & uncle worrying about it .
They were rather inclined towards some " adjustment " , of joining the Reserves to (probably) not get sent to 'Nam , a common if-you-had some $/status comprimise then , IIRC (The owner of the comic shop I went to in Santa Cruz did that .) ~ My male cousin (who later ripped me off) did some sort of joining the Air Force that was supposed to keep him from cobat and give him flight training , IIRC he didn't see combat but didn't get the flight training either .
Nowadays , I tend to look at it in more a " hip " manner ~ " You should , if you're gung-ho about fighting , join up and fight , or , try and avoid it , but give in/' what-the-fuck ' if you can't get away " ~ Um , that wasn't how my folks thought , I think ! !! !! :P
And I am pounding this out , as my time runs out... :x 8O

I turned 55 two months ago. My older brother just missed the Vietnam draft by a few months. He was 17 1/2 when they signed the major treaty. The draft was still on, though in reduced form, until 1975.

I had to register for the draft when I was 19, in 1980.
