The two things that scare me the most about dying is the pain and the idea of never existing anymore.

And to be perfectly honest there's always this thought hanging around in the very back of my head whenever I'm really upset about the idea. What if I'm wrong and there IS an afterlife and I get punished and forced to suffer in pain forever because I didn't believe?

I think I'd feel like the character Mary Henry in Carnival of Souls. That would be absolutely horrifying.

I think if a lot of people spent more time reading up on content that addresses other people's encounters with what they fear, or considered reading to sort out mystical experiences at their unconditioned levels from religious dogma a lot of their worst fears would be abated. Even if you find yourself unconvinced of any existence before or after death you get to much more firmly triage what you'd come to regard as man-made myths built for purposes less related to getting at truth than at organizational governance.

ECT (Electro-Convulsive Therapy) basically reboots the brain like a computer. It induces a seizure and once that stops there is a flatline on the EEG monitor for a few seconds. Then everything starts up again and is normal. Is this close to death?

I had ECT eight times in 2005/6. I remember every single one I had. When I was unconscious there was nothing. No NDE. If that is what my death will be like then I'm fine with that. Nothing is fine with me.

Nothing is fine with me, too. I didn't feel that way when I was younger, of course, as most people don't. But the more I go through in life, the more a release from the suffering of life doesn't sound half bad. That's not to say I don't enjoy life -- I do. But the pain from emotional trauma is weighing heavier on me as times goes by. I'm fine if I drop dead tomorrow, and I'm also fine if I live another couple of decades, as long as I still able to experience joy and passion.

If there is an afterlife, I'm more inclined to believe that it won't be some great paradise, but rather a step up to another level that won't ne necessarily free of trial and tribulations.

I think it would be nice if when we died we all became ghosts and continued about our old routines and then once we realize we are already dead we lose the fear of looking forward to death that we had when we were alive and maybe even let go of our misery from when we were alive because at that point we would realize that everything becomes ok once we die.

No more hunger, thirst, illness, pain, or killing. We would all be happy living without that stuff knowing that we can still exist in some form.

I really doubt it's all placidity, that is the physical world we live in isn't a function as a wish-fulfillment apparatus so it's doubtful, as a part of nature, that our 'new' situation at that point would be a whole lot different.

We'd be in the same universe, oscillating through various fields of being that in self-aware ways look to expand themselves, profit from opportunities, feed on or subsume various beings the way animals stalk prey in the physical world, really just a different wilderness. This is also part of why a lot of pagans and mystics like to find a god or goddess to devote themselves to who might perhaps offer them protection at the point where they transition.

There are perhaps rumors that said wilderness would only exist at a particular layer and more conscious/awake people would drift to more interesting and less predatory places - that could be, I just don't understand the mechanisms for such ideas well enough to separate it out from wishful thinking. For whatever reason though, causes we have no clue on, they'd turn right back around eventually to fill diapers again. It could be that what survives death doesn't have a permanent shelf-life and has to go back to corporeal being again to re-cement its internal bonds.

In a lot of ways when people look at the trickster phenomena, Jacques Vallee's Magonia, it's a bit like whatever's there is taking the piss out of the living in the sorts of supernatural, UFO, cryptids (all likely BS in the literal sense although not necessarily 'lies' from witnesses) and in a way our information-based universe is something of a floating and folding fabric with various attitudes, opinions, and dispositions sprouting out of it t different levels.

No. The events immediately preceding on the other hand...

Any afterlife would be hell if I still have brain damage.

I feel like if there is a better afterlife than it should be waiting for everybody regardless of their religious beliefs.

Death is the one thing that makes everyone equal because we are all destined to die no matter how good or evil or rich or poor we are.

but if the rich have their way, they will achieve a kind of immortality, one way or another. they are fools IMHO because as has been said by many who have matriculated and sent word back via psychic channels, "the worst in heaven makes 'lifestyles of the rich and famous' look like poverty." the way I see it, it does no harm to believe, it makes life seem easier somehow knowing/believing that there is a place of no earthly worries just on the other side of the veil.

Well to me the idea of no longer existing is scarier than the idea of burning in hell forever.

But as an atheist I'm pretty convinced that is exactly what happens to us when we die. It's just so depressing to think about. :(

I'm never going to die. I'm going to upload my consciousness to a robot and store copies of it all over the internet. I'm also gonna have spare robots stashed around the planet and maybe one on the moon. Yes, I'm gonna be a supervillian. :D

But seriously,

I'm just scared of not knowing when I'm gonna die, and don't like the idea of not knowing whats going on here. Afterlife beliefs are just coping mechanisms for not actually knowing what happens when you die. In all likely hood, its eternal nothingness. I hope that's not the case, but most likely it is.

to the people afraid of the death process, I have read that many times the spirit leaves ahead of the actual physical death.
