You don't know a lot of young liberals then. I've heard the phrase multiple times.

If anybody said that to me, I would convey to these people how ridiculous they are.

In this post, I will speak in generalities.

Every young generation is impatient, think they have the answers, say the oldsters are both in the way and creators of the problems. Every old generation does not understand and is petrified of the young, think they are a bunch of spoiled brats and try to block them. Or as a wise boomer LBGQT person wrote way back when.


The WWII generation warned Americans about the then young baby boomers. They said we were unappreciative, spoiled, gluttonous, selfish, naive and yes impatient. Sound familiar? While that generation did create significant changes for the better the hippies became yuppies who became "neoliberals". Boomer gluttony and selfishness created the great recession, horrific deficits, a broken political system, helicopter parenting that caused the "snowflakes" they so often complain about. Impatience turned into me me me now now now.

Are millennials and Gen Z going to be that different than most other generations when they "grow up", age, get responsibility and money? Time will tell and it will tell because we will either be dead or too decrepit to stop you just as the Greatest Generation could not stop us.

But not here in Australia.

After the war, with the great immigration from post-war-torn Europe, there came a serious work ethic.
While a lot of the 5th generation Australians sat back on the verandah drinking beer, the immigrant often had virtually nothing and resolved to make a better life.

They were given 5 pounds,
Told they had to live in certain areas for a considerable time,
Didn't have the gratuitous social support that immigrants have these days.
They had a magnificent work ethic,
Often working more than one job at a time.
The would often get a house and pay off the mortgage extremely quickly.
It wasn't uncommon for groups of families living in the same house and helping each other get their own property.
I remember the "wogs" being despised by some of the 5th gen Aussies because they financially rocketed ahead of the laid back original inhabitants.

The end result was that the 5th gen Aussies started to pull their finger out and chase the desire to get ahead also.

Yes, there were those with an attitude of entitlement, but the immigrants had a very positive influence on the Australian social attitude back then.
