The overall reduction in crimes in the United States has been happening since at least the Presidency of Bush 41. The elder Bush.

Kraftie, I agree with your statement of the hypothetical being impossible, and that the reduction in crime is a decades long trend (I was the first to point this out).

The hypothetical is designed to present a tradeoff and ascertain values.

Obviously, creating hypothetical situations could prove very useful in finding solutions.

Just like "revisionist" history...…"What-if" sorts of history.

Hence hypothethical.

Then you're missing the point of a hypothetical. It's not about whether or not X or Y is possible, it's about determining your way of thinking, your ethical/moral values and your priorities so as to compare and contrast. If I asked "What would you do if you had Alladin's lamp?", would you then respond saying "haha that's not real."?

I only deal with hypotheticals which have a possible basis to them. That's the way I roll.

There is always the one where you have to choose between saving your mother or your wife first should both be hanging from a precipice, ready to fall. This is a most improbably situation----but it is possible. I would deal with that ethical dilemma.

It would be a choice I would never want to make-----and it is a situation which is EMINENTLY UNLIKELY in real life. But I guess I would choose my wife in that instance.

I would choose what my mother would choose.

As far as the Aladdin's Lamp example is concerned, I wouldn't want to deal with it----because I want so many things. I would probably choose the 3 wrong things because of screwed-up priorities.

On aladins lamp, do you think wrong priority or poor articulation is a bigger issue?

Wrong priority. My vocal articulation is fairly good these days----though it wasn't when I was younger.

While my hypothetical is impossible, it is possible that some sort of societal shift would cause a mild increase in violent hate crimes alongside a mild decrease in overall violent crime. To ascertain people's values and feelings about that I made a hypothetical that took it to the extreme.

I also want people to think about trade-offs because too often on this site I get "why does there have to be a trade-off." The answer being that we can't force reality to our will and there are always trade-offs.

Here's a hypothetical (and I'm not saying Trump has reduced crime as its a continuation of a decades long trend), if you could reduce the overall violent crime rate by 50%, but all the remaining crimes were hate crimes, would you?

Pretty sure when the Nazis took over Germany the incidence of overall violent crime reduced due to increasing police use of capital punishment but hate crime against minorities in Germany went up exponentially.

I'm guessing that's a no?

Exponentially? That's an understatement within a Nazi context.....
