I am from a more rural area, and a friend of mine is well. He says that he is depressed here, and wants to move to a big city, because he feels they will be more tolerable of things. But he is white, and I tell him big cities seem to not less tolerant of white people, and that if he moves things will likely be worse, if he is bothered here. Am I likely right on that though? Of course he is free to move and see, but I wonder if that's correct.

Wut? :?

What gives you that idea??

I don’t think I’d worry about moving anywhere in Canada as a white person UNLESS I was a total racist as*hole of a white person.

Big cities ARE more tolerant of non-white people, but they are Not less tolerant of white people. Wtf?

It just seems that way, that in the more urban cities, more white people are getting the shaft in the media, compared to rural areas. But I am only going by it from what I can gather from the media perspective, since I do not live in those cities.

But if white people are treated the same there, then what does my friend hope to gain, if it's the same, and not better?

Is his reason for wanting to relocate to escape racism against white people? Or is his reason to relocate to try to find a place where white supremacy reigns supreme and he can utilize white privilege to the max in order to enrich & enhance his life based on the colour of his skin?

I’m guessing No & No because WTF? Lol

What’s his reason(s) to move to a big city? Culture? Night life? Hustle & bustle of the banking & investment sectors? Job opportunities? Pro sports? Bigger dating pool? World class entertainment options? Food? Arts? Architecture? People? Change of scenery? Car free downtown lifestyle? Access to higher education?

There are countless reasons why someone would move to a bigger city and feel they’ve gained something for it. You’d have to ask him.

He just says people judge him based on things, like his gender or race he feels, where as big city people are more open minded and less judgmental. I didn't go into specifics with him and thought I would ask here, but I can ask more.

Could be that where he lives people expect him to be hyper masculine and racist because he’s a white male in a rural area, but perhaps he’s an effeminate guy and not racist at all. Or something else. Impossible to know what he means without actually knowing him Or asking him if it isn’t obvious what he means.

I don't think people would want him to be that way, because we both live in the same place, and I never came across any of this. But he doesn't want to talk about it when I asked him because talking about it makes him feel depressed. So I don't know why he thinks the big city is less judgmental, but wonder what it could be.

The dude is probably gay.

Not very accepted in rural areas, big gay communities in big cities & very accepting attitudes from the majority of non-gays.

Oh well I haven't heard of any problems of gay people not being accepted in my area with the gay people I know, but maybe.

Being openly gay in rural Australia is like having a big red flag or carrying a target on your back.

The following US states need total lawlessness:

Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia (though I will drop if both Ossoff and Warnock are elected to the Senate), Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming.

Rural people are more traditional. Their viewpoints are more old-fashioned. Their clothes are more simple and dated. Their beliefs are also more traditional. The closer to the city someone lives, the more modern they're likely to be.

In the fall and winter, I'm usually wearing levis, western belt, pearl snap shirt, denim vest, and a beaver felt cowboy hat. For the Christmas Eve candlelight service, I wore a bolo tie, too.

I was raised in a Trailer in rural Michigan and used to be very Conservative...

Then later I met more people at the University I went to, then when I had some jobs I lived in big cities...

I turned the opposite direction after that...

Now I live in a tiny village and in reality don't like it much, it's a nice apartment but my neighbors I don't connect with at all...

I mean my family is poor and don't care... In fact I received criticism about my internship/wanting to go back to get my Masters because I'm on disability right now and they sort of see winning disability as a life goal so they don't have to work... I keep hearing from my family and neighbors "why do you want to work and loose your disability?" My other family members, most of them don't even have their diploma/GED and here I'm sitting on an unused Bachelor's... I didn't earn that for nothing and they don't understand...

I get a little less than $800 dollars a month, plus I have nothing to do during the day, I am looking forward to my internship, and I'm gonna seriously try to get into the University of Idaho for next fall, the professors like me and want me to apply...

Then my goal is to live in a better place far away from my family...

Ah yes people thinking getting disability is just free money and you live the nice luxury lifestyle.

But yet when you do nothing to improve your life, they judge you for being lazy but when you do try to make your life better by deciding to go to school to earn a degree so you can make a real living and not be in poverty, they still judge you when you already are getting free money from the gov.

I also hate the "I don't have to work because I'm on disability" mindset because that implies they can work but are choosing not to because they are enjoying their life of not having to work. And these are the sort of people classists talk about when they hate on the poor. They think all of them are like this.

I think when people talk of "being on disability" the perception is its acquired in order to gain compensation rather than being born with disability.

In the past I needed to be on disability because I was having severe bipolar episodes and stress was causing horrible meltdowns....

Now I'm on great medication and not all but lots of stress is gone from my life...

Time to move off disability...

Good goals! 8)

I have family here that are of that mindset.. get on disability & not have to work. Disability pays up to $1,183.42 (CDN)/mo for a single person here - it’s more than the $400/mo Income Assistance (welfare) pays for a single person.. but it’s certainly no goal of mine considering it costs $2000/mo to rent a 1 bedroom apartment here. People on disability are still allowed to work part time and earn $12k/year without penalties, but still, that’s not enough money to live a very comfortable life here at all. It’s survival money.. and therefore shouldn’t be anyone’s goal to aspire to IMO. It sucks for people who are truly disabled, but it helps keep people who Can work working because they can usually earn more and live better.

Even my social workers are in this mindset, I've heard for years "you need a part-time, minimum wage job so don't lose your disability..."

Years ago, they even wanted me to work in the Goodwill factory back in the day when they circumvented minimum wage laws because back then it was legal to pay people on disability less than minimum wage... I was offered a full time job sorting clothes for $1.25 an hour... Being told "It's not for the pay but would keep you busy..."

Ummm I refused... I didn't earn a Bachelor's Degree in Zoology to work like that... They eventually changed the law and now the disabled people in their factories are payed minimum wage at least... But I really dislike Goodwill now...
