Some might prefer a term which accurately reflects their descent.

Or at least one which doesn't indicate they hearken from South Asia.

"Hispanics" may not be a race per se, but even ignoring the normal qualifications that race is a social construct anyway, they do present a distinct demographic from so-called whites and it is generally expedient to distinguish the two.

Anyway, the substantial majority of Mexico is mestizo mix of native and European, and I believe in general the mean Mexican ancestry will be quite a bit more native than European, so calling Mexicans a different race is as accurate as most race claims.

I really disagree with you here. What about criolos? Would they not be so-called white?

A majority of Mexicans are mixed with European. In any other country they'd be considered mixed European, and not mixed native.

To add: I don't like the whole racial classification. It's stupid. Just say "Brown, white, black" whatever based on the person's skin tone. But then some whites might feel threatened by being considered anything but white.

I think Americans (especially whites) are so traumatized after being demonized for so long over what their ancestors did to the American Indian, that they are willing (in the name of political correctness) to roll out the red carpet, empty their wallets, and usher in the destruction of their culture on behalf of an unappreciative unassimilating uncivilized tribe, even if its the wrong one. The really messed up part is that nobody in the history of the American southwest hated Mexicans more than Native Americans.

I'm actually rather civilized. I eat with a spoon, fork, and other such utensils. Sometimes, I wear a tie.

Actually, I've come to embrace my new culture quite well. Generalizations are usually wrong

Edit: Supposedly, I'm even part Jewish! Ancestors are from some long forgotten part of Spain, and then they went to Mexico. As you can see, pinning down exactly my race is not very easy. I should become a lawyer though, maybe my Jewish blood from the time of the mayflower will give me super powers.

What on earth are you smoking? You're going back tens of thousands of years. "Amerindian's" relation to actual Indians is substantially less than Europeans'. The term "Indian" for native American is pretty much defunct for the simple fact that it is grossly unsuitable as a label.

Inasmuch as discreet racial classifications are nonsensical, arguing over whether they "really are" what race is absurd. My point is that if people want to call them a different race, they have as much ground to stand on as most racial classifications. In America, mixed Africans are considered a different race anyway.

Really? Most people who are mixed with African ancestry just get labeled black. Even if they can pass off as being white. Not so in Latin America. You're either white, indigenous, or black.

Either way, from what I recall the majority have european (mainly R1ba) Y chromosome dna and native mtdna.

Oh, those lascivious Spaniards.

To be perfectly honest, it was a struggle to finish reading that opening post after it became a way of bragging about America.

Unfortunately, in the USA, we have too many people like this:

I was under the impression that Hispanic referred specifically to those descended from Spaniards, and that Latino was the broader term for anyone living in Latin America, who could be African, Native American, White, or some mixture of the above. Am I mistaken in this?

Mexioc has national pride within itself so bad idea to destroy that pride through annexing them. I said leave them alone because they are okay by themselves already.

I stated this in another thread, but one of life's great ironies is that when you try to have an intelligent conversation with people like this in English, they complain about the fact that your are using 'big words' that they cannot understand.

Hispanic is a term that is often interchanged with Latino, to the point where the defination has been delineated, other than that you are essentially correct, though a lot of Mexicans also use the term 'Chicano' as well.

If you flush toilet paper instead of throw it in the garbage can, thats good enough for me. The Mexicans I work with do not comprendo plumbing.. and whats with all the pubic hairs in the sink? On second thought I dont want to know. These guys blow their noses on the inside of their shirts and just continue on like it never happened. These are the same guys back in the kitchen making your lunch.

Justify it anyway you like, but by normal standards
Mexican culture is dirty.

and they so very proud

I think you're confusing Mexican culture with low brow culture. You can find the same types of people among the "white race", and in the same numbers. Judging by how many low brow people you describe, I take it you work in some low wage job. Thats the type of people you'll be around.

Ragtime, I'm sure others mentioned this first but have you head of the North American Union?

looking at your disads:

"1. Culture shock."

LOL WUT? Who gives a s**t? Well I live in the city, suburbans might be more reactionary

"2. Whites would be made an extreme minority"

no they won't. Mexico has half the US population I believe.

"the fact that there would be much more intermariage between hispanics and whites, which would have a new class"

Hispanics are already mixed with caucasians, they'd be still lighter-skinned. And if the "one drop theory" used against african-americans applies they'll be treated as hispanic unless they visibly look and act "white"
