I think 'strident atheism' and the need to rick-roll religion's existence is certain atheists acknowledging that they understand that there's no meaning, at their core they can't deal with it, they need a mission in life and they end up finding that mission in being anti-religion. Once religion's gone, they're going to be between a rock and a hard place over what to wake up in the morning for next.

Personally, I find this a bit funny and ironic, as uncontrolled/unmitigated market shifts and realignments probably do more destroy a sense of meaning in peoples' lives by destroying outdated communities ("creative destruction") than the abscence of theism. And you whole-heartedly support such outcomes.

So the core essence of your 'feel' of life is around the goods and services economy? I guess that just goes to show how completely different people are. I can't even begin to imagine what that sort of lens is like and, for all the people I've talked to, I can think of about as many people who went into a deep depression over VHS being sold anymore as I can think of people who's lives lost all meaning from Pittsburgh or Dallas losing a superbowl.

That completely misreads the point. The whole premise is about how structural shifts in the economy can have effects concentrated on geographically communities. Those shifts can severe the bonds between quite a few people and destroy a lot of pre-existing "social capital".

Right or wrong to do and whether foolish or not, I say that is noble and commendable.

So then, you and I and others here seem to speak as we might at least partly for their same kinds of reasons.

This site is not inherently anti-Christian.

It is just that many of us have thrown off the shackles of superstitious nonsense to embrace freedom of thought as a natal right.

And with that comes the knowledge that religions are created by man, and created with the express purpose of dictating not only how a person shall behave, but what they may believe, and enforcing those dictates with arrest, imprisonment, torture, banishment, or even death. Of course, nowadays a person whose beliefs are different from those around him is either shunned or harassed by 'believers'.

Knowledge is the belief in things that are valid - meaning that there is actual physical evidence to support the knowledge; something other than a collection of largely apocryphal stories passed down from one ignorant desert nomad to the next.

Faith is the belief in things that can not be proven - the existence of God (or many gods), perhaps. While faith in a "Higher Power" is not evidence that the "Higher Power" exists, it can still motivate a person to act in the name of their "Higher Power" - sometimes for the "Greater Good", and sometimes for base selfish interests.

Challenging another person's faith does not make me anti-anything; it is actually an opportunity for those being challenged to demonstrate the validity of their claims ... in some way other than merely repeating the same old Bible verses I've been hearing for the last 50 years ...

irrational belief systems

What makes you think a belief system is irrational?

By the very definition of the terms. A belief system starts from pretending / accepting something is true without facts to support it. It is a house of cards. If something is rational it is based on facts and logic.

Personally I think God is Santa Claus for adults. Some people are brought up in particular societies where a particular religious meme is endemic (Christianity, Islam, Hinduism etc) they automatically adopt those belief systems, often without deeply questioning them. If the same bible belt God fearing Christian had been born in an Arab country they would likely be praying to Mohammed with equal fervour instead of Jesus. Millions of people born into each religious meme and hardly any of them question their own meme or religion in general.

All I hear is "theres no evidence" but when provided with evidence it just gets laughed off or called "not documented" It's really quite hard to be a spiritual person and get across REAL evidence when the scientific world is so closed minded about the type of science they publicise.

People seem to think nothing is real unless disclosed by maintream science, which, in my opinion is extremely stupid. Don't believe, just read, research and learn with an open mind.

If you can't do that, well, in my opinion you aren't worth knowing. Seriously.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. To say that a man named Jesus existed when the bible approximates that he existed does not mean that there is a god or that Jesus was divine. Miracles need to be reproducible and explored by qualified people to ensure that it isn't simply just a scam like the various crying statues that are just a hoax.

It can spread former friends and family across a country no doubt but I guess I haven't had the experience of losing those people altogether. Even if your the type of person who, for example, had a good pool of acquaintances but no 'through thick or thin' friends', don't you still have your own talents, weaknesses, dreams, fears, and ongoing need in terms of figuring out who you are and what you want to do with your life? Funny things happen as well as people move all over the country. Some people move and come back, some make truly great friends where they go next, economic upheaval has the potential to burn weak links but it doesn't leave you waking up in the morning with no reason to be alive nor no possibility of making new friends - unless that is if you're in a rather esoteric circumstance.

You're being fairly accurate in your assessment, and as has been pointed out earlier a lot of the provocations and bashing comes from the atheists here not Christians.

To add to the statement, I find it funny that Atheists here aren't bashing Islam like they bash Christians.

Most of the Atheist threads are humorous in nature. Unlike the homophobic, Islamophobic, or general xenophobic crap that comes out of some of the Theists here
btw I have criticized Islam on several occasions, as have others. However Muslims don't post here, as far as I know, or put threads up about Sharia law or whatever. The various Christians however can almost be expected to write about the worst their faith has to offer as there is no shortage of them here. Most of the 'bashing' as you term it comes as a response to really ignorant or offensive statements. When they aren't making offensive statements its rather civil

Re Science and Religion/Spirituality

Science and Religion can go hand in hand, I'll quote two fellow Englishmen & LDS General authorities about that:

John Taylor wrote:
Science reveals the beauty and harmony of the world material; it unveils to us ten thousand mysteries in the kingdom of nature, and shows that all forms of life through fire and analogous decay are returned again to its bosom. It unfolds to us the mysteries of cloud and rains, dew and frost, growth and decay, and reveals the operation of those silent irresistible forces which give vitality to the world. It reveals to us the more wonderful operations of distant orbs and their relations to the forces of nature. It also reveals another grand principle, that the laws of nature are immutable and unchangeable as are all the works of God.

James E. Talmage wrote:
Miracles are commonly regarded as occurrences in opposition to the laws of nature. Such a conception is plainly erroneous, for the laws of nature are inviolable. However, as human understanding of these laws is at best but imperfect, events strictly in accordance with natural law may appear contrary thereto. The entire constitution of nature is founded on system and order.

(Note: James E. Talmage was a Geologist and Chemist, plus he was a professor of geology)

A bit off topic: Lee a few years back AA given the LDS church the thumbs up to use a customised version of the 12 Steps

Science and religion could go hand in hand if the religious scientists put working to falsify their own beliefs in equal standing, which is no doubt a rare occurrence.
On the topic of the LDS- the LDS and archaeology are not compatible

It is a debate forum, so if people go there expressing religious views they will be debated, simple as that. I've noticed there is a general tendency for Aspies to be more logical and less accepting of irrational belief systems so when people just spout biblical stuff the Aspie mind is likely to say "give me some evidence or proof" and this is where the debates fall down, because religion is based on faith / self delusion / social memes not facts.

Another aspect is that WP's members are from all over the world and many Western countries / societies are no longer as religious as America or the Arab countries. So this cultural divide crops up quite frequently. I've noticed that particularly the bible belt posters of America are often shocked at the level of atheism elsewhere. Christianity is so engrained in their society that they find it difficult to comprehend they are in a minority in the world.

Mention "religion" or "belief systems" and debate will follow like day follows night.

Can't this concept be conveyed without saying people of faith are self-deluded and following an irrational belief system? THAT is how this site is biased against faith. To speak in such derogatory terms and have it not be seem as offensive or attacking shows just how solidly that mindset exists here.

It hurts me. Every. Single. Time.

And yet ... I'm supposed to be believe that is just me being sensitive. That is how my objection to the terms is seen. I accept it, but I will always believe it is wrong. Feels great when people I care about and respect feel free to term an aspect of who I am as deluded and irrational ...

Maybe not, but no one else is allowed to be consistently told they are deluded and irrational.

It is a problem. We've learned to swallow it because Alex certainly doesn't see the faith based side, but it is a problem and I have long been hurt by it.

Actually, the Atheist posts tend to be mocking people whom are Christian, venomous, etc. Your idea of humor is such that if I used the same kind of statements you would be arguing for me to be banned.

Seriously, you may think it is funny, but in reality what you guys are calling funny is often downright offensive. You (as a group) constantly try to mock people whom are religious as being stupid, even people specifically on these forums. Your statements to the you (as a group) do not, is really quite laughable.

I don't engage in that sort of behavior. I am of the Apatheist school of Atheism, and I have posted pictures making fun of Atheism as well. In any case, the light humor you find so offensive is not even close to being equatable with the homophobia and xenophobia that some of the Christians here (including you) are responsible for. There are a lot of harmless Theistic threads that some Atheists do engage in in a non-offensive manner, but I don't expect you would mention that.

I agree, and with Inuyasha above ^. There's a high level of offensive disrespect and or/mockery towards anything religious in PPR, not just Christian.
