As I recall, nobody really had issues about the scrutiny paid to G. W. Bush's military record and "Ivy League" education, but it's considered offensive to subject Obama to the same?

Hypocrisy.

You run for public office, you must expect your life to be an open book to your constituents. Don't like that? Don't run for office.

What's offensive is the racial undertone here - that a black man really couldn't earn his way to Harvard. Trump even said as much that he "had heard" that Obama was a bad student, implying that he had made it only due to affirmative action. Trump "heard" this only in his own head - journalist David Frumm recalled how a law professor had once boasted how one of his students was the smartest person he had ever met. This student was Barack Obama.

Obama made Harvard Law Review. No mean feat. He is smarter than the younger Bush.

Absolutely. But unfortunately, a fact like that means little or nothing to the crowd Trump is appealing to.

That's the same offensive racial undertone that underlies affirmative action in the first place. Getting rid of affirmative action is the only way to get rid of the prejudice.

I think the offense is in the eye of the beholder. It's not racism, just an effort to address historical inequality. As with Indian reparations and educational benefits, though not as extensive.

As for Obama, he graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard. Trump's slurs are just silly.. If he's implying that Harvard let Obama in by reviewing more than just his earlier grades, what does it matter? Admission boards do have discretion and it looks like they made an amazing pick. An honors graduate, president of law review and US president. An impressive and rare outcome.

Scrutiny happens. The thing is, we are now very much at the point of "further" with Obama. How many presidents have to defend their BIRTH?

For the record, I reached the "enough is enough" point with Bush long before the press did, too. His military record was directly relevent to the office, but all we needed was the outline. All the who is lying follow up tends to just muck everything up, IMHO. At that point, I fail to understand why the issue continues. We don't need full court on everything that happened in a politicians distant past. People grow and change, among other things.

As far as his (G.W.'s) "Ivy League" education goes, I don't doubt for a moment that people questioned it. Although, I do have to consider that it's one thing to go to a top-notch school, and quite another to actually pass your classes. If people claim he did THAT, I'd have questions... Or at the very least assume he was graded on the curve. He is a bumbling idiot who embarrassed this country every time he opened his mouth. I'm STILL in complete amazement that he won a second term.

Hate is a strong, ugly word. Immensely dislike, though not with every fiber of my being..... so it could be worse.

I don't think anyone ever confused the hard partying Bush with an honors graduate. I think there was no question he attended Yale as a legacy case.

Xenophobic is the more accurate term than racist. Birthers don't necessarily hate black people. They just hate half-black liberals with funny non-European sounding names. The issue is the guy is a liberal with a Muslim middle name. That's immediate grounds for distrust in the eyes of a lot of neocon Bushie Jr. voting conservatives.

Well, you know, the Constitution says the President has to be a white male, right? Let's see here...

Article II, Section 1, paragraph 4 wrote:
No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Huh. That's all it says? Well, I'm sure there's something somewhere about being a Christian...

Article VI, paragraph 3 wrote:
The Senators and Representatives before mentioned, and the Members of the several State Legislatures, and all executive and judicial Officers, both of the United States and of the several States, shall be bound by Oath or Affirmation, to support this Constitution; but no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States.

Really? Well, obviously, there's only one conclusion that can be reached: the Founding Fathers were a bunch of America-hating hippie pinko commie liberals!

I didn't Agree with G.W.'s policies, but he didn't let his imperfections, get in his way in life, and kept moving forward in his own way. Despite all that he did that many of us see as wrong, he proves that mistakes don't dictate failure, as long as someone doesn't fail themselves for their mistakes. In that regard, he himself, is a little amazing.

Some point to his last name and priviledge; I agree he would have not got there without his last name, but imagine the expectations he was expected to meet, as the "black sheep" of the family. Jeb was the golden boy, but G.W. had a quality that many don't have.

To me he and Obama are both enigmas; Obama uses perfection, and it is evident he does not like to make mistakes, when he is aware he makes them. That perfectionist nature was necessary to get him where he's at. Bush, on the other hand, made a tremendous amount of mistakes, but cruised right on through them, as a pesonal method for his own success.

Were the Bush administrations successful? I think the answer there is an obvious one. But, as far as his personal success, considering the mistakes he pushed through, I would say he is an enigma of success as far as fulfilling ones' potential. Failing forward works, much better than perfection and fear of failure, from what I have seen in life.

I think many people in the general public saw that as a quality rather than a detriment; not likely many perfectionists saw it that way. I was one of those perfectionists, and it made me cringe to imagine that a President could say the things he did in Public, but that is the point, he did, kept doing it, and it didn't slow him down.

Back on topic, on Obama's records, considering his perfectionist nature, his grades might not have met the standard he set for himself at the other schools. And perhaps his health records also have evidence that don't meet the standards he wants the public to see.

I don't see what the need is to release them though, his achievements at Harvard are also an enigma of success that would be measured that way for anyone. He probably understands that, if he did have some bad grades at other schools, he would never hear the end of that instead of respect for what he was able to accomplish at Harvard.

When the U.N. ,and I specifically recall France, told W. Bush that they wouldn’t support a US mission in Iraq, and Bush acted in a very Cartman-esque way, “Screw you guys, I’m a do what I want…” I had a very distinct impression of a “my penis is bigger than yours” attitude… Of course, he’d never be able to articulate it as such…

“Well, uuummm, see my penis… if we were to compare them, I mean, hold them side by side… But not touching, cuz I’m not homosexual.. not that I have anything against homosexuals, but uuuhhh everyone knows you go to hell for it, so it’s wrong.. but ummm if we were to ummm side by side compare our penises, you would uhhhh see that the collective American penis is uhhhh bigger, not to say that your’s is small, but uuhh collectively, your penis is not as big as my uuuh American penis… cuz, well… I’ve been in foreign restrooms, and not that I looked, cuz that would be gay, but I noticed that uuuhhhh my cock is bigger. I win. Let's go to war."
