I recall how one Arab traveler in what is today Russia had written how a Viking trader there worshiped the image of a penis, saying that that was what had made him.
Maybe this "penis cult" was part of the worship of the fertility god Frey.

You know, it was the "uncivilized" Germans and Celts of Iron Age Europe who were the first to wash with soap. That seems to have caught on with everyone else, too.

My dad told me, regarding circumcision, that the practice was institutionnalized in the jewish community, because the Hebrews back in the beginning did not have access to water to take showers and such (they were admittedly living in a desertic region). Hence, for hygiene's sake, since they could not wash and clean themselves which would eventually lead to developping smegma on their genitals, they practiced circumcision in order to "circumvent" (hurr hurr) the problem. He did say that nowadays the practice doesn't even have any justification whatsoever that is rationnal. =/

It's the same with the interdiction to eat pork, which was because pork in ancient times had diseases. =/ Same with the interdiction to eat non-scaly fish, because they were growing up in marshes and such...
