First of all, the $75 fee should not be option; it should be mandatory. That being said, emergency services must NEVER be underfunded. And yes, the money must come from somewhere. However, surely there must be some wealthy persons and companies in Tennessee that can foot the bill. And I really don't give 2 sh*ts and fart if you libertardians get butthurt about having to pay higher taxes for services that benefit all of us! If you don't pay up, it's gonna be a real pain in the rear.

No. I'm pretty sure the guy admitted on TV that he knew he hadn't paid the tax but figured he could just pay it if a fire ever started.

When you buy a house in one of these areas, it's made clear that you have to pay as well.

AspieRouge, why should it be mandatory? If your dumb enough to take the risk and not pay so be it. That's called responsibility and taking responsibility for your actions. Everyone else paid the tax, this one dumb f**k didn't. No need to change the rules because one dumb f**k wanted to be dumb.

He chose to not pay, he suffered the consequences. Simple as that. You do know that if someone had been in the house, they would have done a rescue. They do not allow people to die; only stupid people to loose their property because they gambled and lost.

There is no need to impose taxes on rich people, the fire tax pays for the service. You just have to pay it, or suffer the consequences.

And don't me going on your butt hurt comment, cause I could make a few about responsibility being a foreign idea to liberals.

"Responsibility" is a joke. People are too stupid to truly be responsible; and that's why it's necessary for the state to protect people from themselves. When the state sits back and leaves people to their own devices, they do stupid sh*t that harms themselves and others. And FYI bub, I am not a liberal.

I've always had a suspicion that most rural policy makers rode the short bus; especially in the american south. Stories like this are all the proof that I need.

In my community, fire insurance for the home is awfully expensive because by the time the nearest fire department would arrive, it would probably be too late to save much of anything. Because of the expense, I think that most of us don't have any insurance.

I've been tempted to build a house with compressed earth blocks largely to try to make it as immune to complete structure fires as possible.

Fighting forest fires is not only a huge waste of time and money, active fire suppression is damaging the ecology. That's why Smokey Bear needs to STFU: Nobody can prevent forest fires! And this means YOU. Forest fires are a natural process that rejuvenate forests and are essential for propagating seeds for several species. Fire suppression only makes fires even more destructive and uncontrollable and has led to epidemics of tree killing bark beetles.

I'll ask it again. What makes you think that they are Libertarians? The odds are overwhelming that they are far more likely to be Republicans or Democrats instead of Libertarians.

To a Libertarian, the idea would be to open the fire department business up to anyone who wished to enter the business. In this case, it was a city fire department, not a private fire department, faced with a fire that was not in its jurisdiction and for which they had no authority to fight the fire.

Libertarians? Not very likely.

Good gawd! A privatized fire department would be a NIGHTMARE. Firemen don't just put out fires, they also carry out rescues of people who are in dangerous situations and function as paramedics. If they are privatized, then not only will poor people die and lose their homes, but there will be a serious lack of efficiency and rationing of services that will even claim the lives of people who can afford it simply because they have an emergency at a time and place that isn't convenient.

Taxes pay for civilization. That is why I believe that the annual fee for emergency services should not be voluntary, it needs to be requires by law.

Oh the US had private fire dept during the gilded age....ironically was the upper class who pushed for public fire dept. because fire started from poor people house often arrived in the rich quarter

So did Scottsdale Arizona, which is still there. It did not burn to the ground.

There is no such thing, "free" just means that its paid via taxes as opposed to on a voluntary basis.

TANSTAAFL. There ain't so such thing as a free lunch. Someone has paid for all those emergency services. In Britain one can receive the services at no extra charge but someone had to pay for it.
