Tennessee Williams is one of my favorite playwrights. I especially enjoyed Suddenly last Summer. Very horrific story, indeed. While I always considered Cat On A Hot Tin Roof to be almost a comedy - I really enjoyed it.
I must admit, though, MacArthur - while a great general - always came across to me as an overbearing dick. You don't cross Harry Truman and keep your job!

Yes,He was a dick but the military will do that to you.If you like dark Southern authors try Cormac McCarthy's book Child of God.He is the same author that did No Country for Old Men and All the Pretty Horses and Suttre ,(maybe spelled wrong) the former and latter are great. He has some others I've read but they are pretty depressing, good but very dark.A modern day Faulkner.

I know of Cormac McCarthy, and I've seen No Country For Old Men and The Road. I'd like to read his stuff sometime. I did take a glance at his novel, The Road, and thought his writing style was very reminiscent of one of my favorite writers, Texas born Robert E. Howard. Howard is best known for giving us Conan the Barbarian, and for creating American heroic fantasy, while Tolkien was creating the British version of the genre, very much independent of one another.

Racism is a fairly recently invented word.
It's mostly used these days by governments or their stooges to quell complaints about mass immigration.

In the UK anybody who dares to question the invasion of our shores by hundreds of thousands of muslims (that NOBODY wants here) is instantly called a racist.

The movement of people around the globe is a really hard issue to take sides on.Many people leave their homes because they have nothing. But then again it is threatening to ones culture to have a large group of people who are culturally different. When my son was born 23 years ago at a hospital 60 miles away there were nothing but generic white babies. Now that area is very Hispanic.Tyson brought them in to work(exploit) at the chicken plants. As a child growing up in Arkansas most people black and white had been here for generations, all of a sudden there were "newcomers" ,people who moved here from other states.Mostly attracted to cheap real estate and no zoning. It was a bit of a culture shock.A lot of back to the landers arrived, mostly in northern Ark and it really scared the locals.all we knew of hippies was what was on the news and that was Charles Manson.I can understand people's need for a better life but it is hard to see things change so fast,I fear for the loss of a culture that is beautiful and unique and HOME.

I should add, had Robert E. Howard lived today, he almost certainly would have been diagnosed with Asperger's.

Why do they call it "The War of Northern Aggression" when the South started it anyway?
I do think it's weird that Southerners want to glorify a war that was basically started by a bunch of Southern Aristocrats who tricked a bunch of pig ignorant farm boys to fight for slavery.
It's like trying to glorify the 1942 Philadelphia Philies (who were 42-109) or even the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (20-134)
As for racism, yeah you can't separate the Confederacy or the Confederate flag from it entirely.

The Yankees were out to destroy the institution of slavery, particularly by nullifying the fugitive slave acts (which were constitutional prior to the Civil War). In addition the Yankees were determined to close the western territories to the institution of slavery. That means slavery as an institution would have withered and died.. This assault on the "peculiar institution" (slavery) was taken as a kind of war initiated and prosecuted by the Yankees against the Southron States. Hence the name, War of Yankee Aggression.

Misslizzard, you'll like this. It's from Florence King, but she got it from her grandmother.

When God made the Southern woman, He summoned His angel messengers and He commanded them to go through all the star-strewn vicissitudes of space and gather all there was of beauty, of brightness and sweetness, of enchantment and glamour, and when they returned and laid the golden harvest at His feet, He bagan in their wondering presence the work of fashioning the Southern girl. He wrought with the golden gleam of the stars, with the changing colors of the rainbow's hues and the pallid silver of the moon. He wrought with the crimson that swooms in the rose's ruby heart, and the snow that gleams on the lilly's petal. Then, glancing down deep into His own bosom, He took of the love that gleamed there like pearls beneath the sun-kissed waves of a summer sea, and thrilling that love into the form He had fashioned, all heaven veiled it's face, for lo, He had wrought the Southern girl.

My oldest daughter wants me to needlepoint that for her to put on her wall in her livingroom when they move out. They are moving in a few months. Both she and her fiance are agnostic leaning towards athiest, but she loves that and wants it on her wall. It's pretty isn't it?

Oh, I'm a good old rebel
Now thats just what I am
And for this yankee nation
I do no give a damn.

I'm glad I fit (fought) against 'er (her)
I only wish we'd won
I ain't asked any pardon
For anything I've done.

I hates the Yankee nation
And eveything they do
I hates the declaration
Of independence too.

I hates the glorious union
'Tis dripping with our blood
I hates the striped banner
And fit (fought) it all I could.

I rode with Robert E. Lee
For three years there about
Got wounded in four places
And I starved at Pint (Point) Lookout.

I coutch (caught) the roomatism (rheumatism)
Campin' in the snow
But I killed a chance of Yankees
And I'd like to kill some mo'. (more.)

Three hundred thousand Yankees
Is stiff in southern dust
We got three hundred thousand
Before they conquered us.

They died of southern fever
And southern steel and shot
I wish they was three million
Instead of what we got.

I can't take up my musket
And fight 'em down no mo' (more)
But I ain't a-goin' to love 'em (them)
Now that is serten sho. (certain sure.)

And I don't want no pardon
For what I was and am
I won't be reconstructed
And I do not give a damn.

Dear OliveOilMom,
That was lovely,it would make a good wall hanging for your daughter.
And for the record I don't hate Yankees,my best friend that died almost two years ago to this date was a Yankee, his relations even fought here in Ark at the Pea Ridge battle field,It's a funny story really, his relation got a medal for getting wounded in the battle but what really happened was he was in a house of ill repute and climbed out the window(maybe hubby came home?"and got injured. His family thinks it's a hoot!Bravely wounded in battle trying to get his pants up ? I miss my friend a lot and he was by far one of the finest human beings I have ever had the pleasure to know.God bless you R.V.D.and wherever you are may the beer always be cold!
Here is a poem written by an anonymous confederate soldier

I asked God for strength that I might achieve
I was made weak ,that I might learn humbly to obey,
I asked for health, that I might do greater things,
I was given infirmity, that I might do better things,
I asked for riches, that I might be happy.
I was given poverty, that I might be wise.
I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men,
I was given weakness, that I might feel the need for God.
I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.
I was given life, that I might enjoy all things.
I got nothing that I asked for,but everything I hoped for
Almost despite myself,my unspoken prayers were answered..
I am,among all men,most richly blessed.

The American Civil War was in fact, according to Ken Burn's The Civil War, the first time two literate populations went to war against each other.

Thank you. I think she will like it. I have another pattern that has magnolias and I'm going to use that to put them as a border around the sampler, with vines.
