Everyone's acting like he's such a horrible person but I thought he did more good for the gay community than he did bad? Considering his "church" never expanded at all and had very few members (having said that, why did he get so much publicity?) I'd like to think everyone would just look at him thinking "Wait a minute.. why do we hate gay people again? This makes no sense.." Sure, he was a hate-filled man but he did more good than bad, even if we don't want to recognize it - he turned more people pro-gay than he did anti-gay.
All he cared about was causing psychological grief to others look at his tactics! His group wasn't just protesting gays. They were trying to create shock, horror and dismay then they said it was for God and in the Bible. It was God's word. They see themselves as the only true Christians but they go by what's in the Old Testament than they do the New. Jesus died for the sins of mankind it means you can be gay if you want.
I guess a good counter arguement would be that he did harm to the christian community. Every atheist page likes to quote Fred Phelps like he's an accurate representation of what it means to be christian.
