Told you in the beginning that this was all for naught.

You missed the Golden Age of PPR.

I miss Ruveyn's consistently hilarious (but always bang on point) one-liners, amongst other things.

Haven't seen Awesomelyglorious round these parts for a while. Whatever happened to the cabal of Strident Atheists?

I joined just in time to catch the last of the golden era. Then it seemed to go down hill where it just wasn't very interesting, more like boring.Hardly worth posting a reply.
The old Troll King AP was a hoot till he got banned. The first troll I ever met and the finest by far.You could always count on him to keep things stirred up with in a humorous way.I think his last thread was "do feminists like bathing suits" or something of that sort.Guess he pushed the limit with that one.

Yeah. Been one or two people over the years who were entertaining, who often had some great perspectives and arguments, but who also had a tendency to lose their sh*t and vault over the line.

Was AP perma-banned? I thought he bowed out after receiving a temp suspension, or was that someone else?

The rumor was perma-ban.

No, I'm sure we agree on a number of things...

You're thinking of Inuyasha; AP, who was himself a sockpuppet of Pandabear ostensibly created so that he could "reset" his WP reputation, was perma-banned after spamming the forum with a huge number of feminist baiting threads and cheesecake images, then sending some insane PMs to one of the mods.

You're right, I was thinking of Inuyasha.

I wasn't aware of the mod-spamming. I don't pay much attention to the politicking beyond whichever post I'm currently responding to.

After I was banned years ago, I learned that paying attention to that politicking was a vital survival skill for someone like me who likes to argue strongly and won't back down if I think something is unfair, so I've made a real effort to keep lines of communication open since then. AP was kind of an example of that, I spent a lot of time talking to Cornflake about how his provocations wouldn't be tolerated going the other way, so he started getting reigned in and evidently couldn't handle that, hence his unhinged behavior and eventual ban. Things are a lot better now, I don't recall if you posted much in PPR back in 2008-2010 or so, but the mods at that time really were more of a hostile occupying force, at least if you weren't a liberal.

I lurked a lot more than posted in PPR prior to 2010, and hung out a bit on IRC (which was hostile AF). Was going through pretty major changes in my life then, so I didn't have much time to get involved in debate and discourse.

I wouldn't say things are necessarily better or worse now, but they're certainly different. We've definitely got a far more reasonable set of mods than at any time I can think of, but there are certain absent voices who added a lot to this board - we've mentioned a few already.

I'd say this thread had gone off track, but then again, the way it turned into Great Trolls WP Has Known seems informative, too.

Dox and others have mentioned times that the boards have gotten particularly heated, and I've mulled it over. It sounds like things get intense when it seems like social boundaries are moving. RAW wrote that animals mark their territory with urine, and humans mark their territory with ink (now, electrons). In nature, that's when you get conflict, and you can extend that to conflict between groups.

It seems like some very sophisticated groups have weaponized trolling. It's not as though they get to keep those memes to themselves, however, once they use them in public. I get the sense that pathogenic memes have been released into the wild, and the immune system of the internet community has not caught up. This has been going on for a while, I suppose, but it feels like I can suddenly see the fnords. (not the username)

I concur, but sometimes I feel like I'm in the movie Arrival.

Yeah,he did go overboard on the merits of Thai ladies. It seemed to me he was a very lonely man desperate for female attention, even if it was negative.Sort of like a young boy pulling the pig tail of a girl he likes. In his case it was more at time like the young boy hit a hornets nest with a broom. He could be quite witty at times and was good with a snappy comeback. I was unaware he got into it with a mod, that was foolish of him.

There's a right way and a wrong way to do sock puppets and AP did it the wrong way. Hell, if there was any characteristic distinction between "Pandabear" and AP I missed it. Gotta change things up a bit...

Who, me? :)
The friend of a friend used to know a troll and told me some things about it that were passed on.

The funny part was that he'd been given a short suspension under his Pandabear account, resurfaced as AP, was immediately detected, but begged the mods to let him stay under the new name, because he said he wanted a clean slate and a new start with the other members here, but then within days was acting exactly like his old self. I happen to know this because I had reported the AP account as trollish for a new member, and the mod I had PM'd asked if I had a guess as to who it might be, and when I got it on the first try, thought it was so funny that he gave me the whole story.
