We came sort of close with the Patriot Act. But it was repealed.

Congress----in a bipartisan sense---won't let Trump go too far.

I would normally take comfort in that, but as the Never-Trumpers like Sanford have been losing their offices due to fanatical idolatry toward Trump, I'm afraid the Republican majority have traded in their testicles for a free pass to Trump Tower.

We have an excellent system of "checks and balances" which offset attempts at tyranny by either the Executive, Legislative, or Judicial branches.

do you think it will survive The Dotard [and his 10s of millions of minions] unscathed?

Wait, does dotard refer to Trump? What does it stand for? Demonstrably Obstinate Terrible Amoral Republican Dork?

No one can predict the future but sometimes it seems like the history of democracy is the history of its disassembly by "Patriots" who really have more in common with George III than George Washington.

democracies are fragile things, there has not been one that didn't eventually succumb to dark forces.

Fragile alright. Free speech gives a voice to those opposed to free speech.

Well, darlin's, Professor Philip Alston, United Nations Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights, visited the US in 2017 and has a few rather pointed remarks on the subject.

Recommended reading here and also here.

His full report just came out... here and here's the money quote:

Quote:
Recognize a right to health care

78. Health care is, in fact, a human right. The civil and political rights of the middle class and the poor are fundamentally undermined if they are unable to function effectively, which includes working, because of a lack of the access to health care that every human being needs. The Affordable Care Act was a good start, although it was limited and flawed from the outset. Undermining it by stealth is not just inhumane and a violation of human rights, but an economically and socially destructive policy aimed at the poor and the middle class.
