During the Great Depression, mortality actually decreased. People lived longer as treatments for TB improved.
There was an increase in suicides. In 1928 there were 14 suicides per 100,000 people. In they peaked at about 18. I am reading those numbers off a digital graph so they may be slightly out.
Let us say that:
- The Great Depression caused 4 suicides per 100,000 people, every year. This is a high-end estimate.
- The US population was 130m throughout the Depression (this is the estimated population in 1938, so high).
- The Depression lasted 10 years.
That equates to 52,000 deaths.
Now let’s say that this virus causes a two-year depression. The US population is 330m. The impact on suicides over the two years is the same.
That’s 26,400 people killed by the recession.
Now let’s say that without any restrictions, and with people forced to live their normal lives (realistically most people would choose to isolate anyway), 80% of the US would get sick, and 0.5% of those who get sick would die. That is a low-end estimate for the mortality rate. In that situation, 1.32 million people would die.
It isn’t even close.
Conclusion: the people who are easily panicked and being short-sighted are those who think an economic downturn is worse than 1,320,000 Americans dying.

Exactly.
My mother isn't in great health. I'm not willing to put her at risk just so some people can "own the libs" by spreading a pandemic.
Why would she be out in the public when she is at risk? The way I look at is, if everyone is in lockdown for 6 months, I will still be in isolation. If everyone goes back to work next week, I will still be in isolation. It won't make any difference to me personally because in either case, I will be in isolation. I am just as safe either way.
Just so some people can own the libs? Seriously?
If I have to go back to work, I might get exposed to it and would bring it home to her.
And the amount of idiots (at least the ones in my friends list) who are complaining that this is a "liberal conspiracy" is nuts.
You might get a exposed to it anywhere outside the house. That's why my mom has a pretty rigorous system in place to keep me from catching it. Even though that's unlikely since supposedly only 0.105% of the population have it.
I can see where you're coming from with people complaining it is a liberal conspiracy.
Having to go to work everyday would greatly increase my chances.

It is definitely obviously being politically exploited. Just because it is real does not mean a political party is not trying to take advantage of it. It is pretty obvious one political party wants prolonged shutdowns while the other doesn't. And the former is into socialism. And prolonged shutdowns is a good recipe for bringing in socialism to relieve the masses. Everyone is already getting paid some by the government. Is it really all that far fetched?
Yet on the other side, you have the blatantly insane doubting everything from the mouths of doctors, mayors, and governors, believing them to all be part of a deep state conspiracy to destroy Trump, as voiced by the likes of Limbaugh and Hannity, and others who have always sought to eclipse the truth. This includes that lunatic train engineer who tried to run a train into a hospital ship, to the idiots who think they can prove that hospitals aren't filling up with the corona virus sick. Then there are the obvious liars and fraudsters of the religious right who want to see churches reopen so they can rake back in donations, such as that king-of-fraudsters, Copeland, who claimed he used God's breath to blow the virus away, and Trump's own religious adviser and probable Whore of Babylon, Paula White. And then in closing, you have those hardhearted businessmen who, only interested in keeping themselves rich, are willing to sacrifice the lives of their labor force to keep the bucks flowing in.
If this were a time of war,
Where china attacked Peal Harbour,
Do you think partisan wars would still be in evidence?

While wartime had diminished some partisanship during WWII, people still found opportunity to fight political battles. The Republicans still had attacked FDR during Presidential elections, but the American people agreed with Roosevelt that it would be a mistake to switch horses midstream. When FDR finally died as the war raged on, common people wept openly, while wealthy conservatives who had seen him as a class traitor cheered.
I think even with loyalty and patriotism at an all time high as at that time, we'd still see political and ideological battles going on today.

I am well aware that I am going off-topic,
However,
Would you agree that the left-wing media is continually baiting Trump and trying to trip him up?
Isn't this counterproductive in dealing with the coronavirus crisis?
Yes, I will make the observation, that Trump is too preoccupied with reacting, and that diminishes his credibility/gravitas.

If they are, it's only because Trump has always been a verbal fountain of ignorance and cruelty, and so it's hard not to give into it.

I have seen unethical behaviour by left-wing journalists and media, in America, simply for the purpose of political point-scoring.
And poor form by Trump doesn't excuse a lack of integrity by the opposition, wouldn't you say?
Yes, I will make the observation that Trump seems to exhibit signs of "Illusory Superiority".

Are you seriously/rationally calling him a psychopath?
Or was it a post embroidered with cathartic thread?
Was it a throw-away-line to get the thread back on track?
Perhaps a combination?
Hmmmm.

Doubtlessly there have been people in the media with prejudices that doesn't reflect well on their industry. That said, many journalists accused of this have been fingered by Trump supporters who only want to make the mainstream media as a whole out to be biased and corrupt.
