In the medieval ages, priests were believed to be infallible by many peasants simply because their role in society told the common man that God deemed them correct. Nowadays, the common man is more apt to believe the words of these publish-or-perish and highly politicized academics. Fnord, if you were alive in the the Medieval period, you'd be the type who wouldn't question the priest or monk. If you were alive in the late 1800s, you'd believe in Eugenics, because academics said it was true, and 'they're the ones with superior education and credentials.' Your beliefs are dictated to you and you fall into the trap of appealing to authority. Troublesome.

But academics disagree with each other rather often. As a religious zealot, only "evidence" from a contradicting academic priest will be entertained by you.

It's a paradox, really....in my experience, it's been hard to be able to experience true, unadulterated happiness without the experience of the opposite.

However, I have tended to be complacent, and to veer away from experiencing various types of adversity. This has stymied my progress in some ways.

I live my life "down the middle." It's boring for me sometimes, and it's boring for others sometimes. Sometimes, it produces in me a feeling of apathy.

But I'd rather see the forest and the trees, than to be like Sisyphus, having to stop that big boulder from ruining me.

The word "privilege" implies a specific and intentional advantage given to white people and less of a indifference like you allude to.  Perhaps it should be called "white indifference" instead of while privilege.  Not surprisingly white people who struggle, of which there are plenty will get massively and justifiably butt hurt if they're repeatedly told they have privilege
As implied in Ms. McIntosh's list, "White Indifference" to the struggles of non-whites is a "White Privilege".  I trust her claims more than any counter-claims due to her superior education and credentials, which counter-claimants seem to lack in abundance.
Where I'm from, non whites seem to be doing better than whites. Perhaps it applies more in the US than the Welsh valleys but in the UK the poorest areas are often the whitest.
I have witnessed the same phenomenon in America -- usually in areas dominated by whites.

My own hometown, for example, was 98% white when I lived there.  The wealthier whites lived on the south side, the less wealthy whites lived on the north, and the poorest whites lived in a mobile-home park between the city limits and the airport.  They were referred to as "Trailer Trash" for various reasons.

The only non-whites -- doctors, engineers, teachers, and a cop -- all lived on the south side, and seemed to be respected by their neighbors for their education and relative wealth.

I'm not trying to be belligerent. But I don't like partial quotes or when people pick-and-chose what to absorb. Yes, I suggested re-reading the thread for my responses...in the same sentence, I mentioned scrolling for my name / avatar. If that sentence alone was too much to comprehend, I don't think the discussion can proceed any further.

I think I'd like to actually collect your posts with experiences (not opinions) in this thread and post them in one place because they're quite thought-provoking, showing some apparently real myths around "white privilege" in your society.
Are you okay with quoting them in one post?

PS - anyone's capacity for absorbing information is limited. We need to live with it. The best one can do is correct their mistakes.

Whatever you chose to do, just double check that it's an actual quote I made. Look at my user name or avatar. I hate when things are erroneously attributed to me...or when things I actually do say are cherry-picked, with certain bits being ignored. Just make sure that whatever you decide to do, it's me you're quoting. And include all points made in a related quite. That's all.

Shouldn't that make you question the whole notion of white privilege then? It's the same with me. Indians seem to be doctors and engineers, I'm even friends with one and went to see him last night. People from Pakistan seem to own a lot of shops which I actually wanted to do but the barrier of entry is surprisingly high. I would hardly say they're at a disadvantage at all.

The fact you noticed it in your own home town should immediately make you wonder. I generally don't trust academics who are heavily political too....like at all. An academic getting political is a very quick way to discredit themselves in my eyes and academics in this field often always are.

Thanks... and, sorry, again. I'm really sorry.
I'll double-check now.

There is certainly "white privilege' within a US context.

However, "white privilege" has a rather narrow scope within areas outside of Academia. Many people of all stripes in this country, including people of European descent, do not experience/benefit from what is defined as "white privilege."

Looking at a white person, and assuming the person is "privileged," is patently ridiculous.

Just like looking at an African-American person, and assuming the person is oppressed, is patently ridiculous.

Experiences (not opinions) of ezbzbfcg2 from this thread - I hope they're not "cherry-picked".

I remember there was a black guy I used to work with at a grocery store. We got along, but he'd often say things like, "Oh, you're a perfectly good white guy," his facetious way of saying"you're a regular white person who isn't overtly racist, but gets privilege I don't." He was the most in shock why the perfectly good white managers made me a scapegoat, even saying something like, "I don't get it, I thought it was supposed to be the Aryan Brotherhood here, why are they going after you??"

When I asked people on WP what "white privilege" is, they told me about... simply not being harassed for not being white. I believe it should never be a privilege not to be harassed, it should be the norm.
But, apparently, some American non-whites believe in "white privilege" in a completely different meaning.

Nope.  Even now, my hometown's population is only 0.002% of the total population of America, making it hardly representative of the entire nation.  Besides, only in areas where whites and non-whites have almost equal populations do I observe instances of white privilege being displayed.  The white people involved are almost always oblivious to these privileges, of course.

Automatically assuming one race is privileged and one oppressed seems to be all that white privilege is about though. The number or times I've been called a f*****g prick for my apparent "white privilege" is impressive.

I'll believe otherwise when I'm treated differently.

As an American, my experiences are US-centric. Hence, my criticism that someone from a different country (like Poland) may not have the social experience to comprehend what I'm saying. Many non-whites in the US do, indeed, assume all whites experience the same amount of privilege, which is sad. A wall is put up. They don't understand our white American caste-system. To them, "white" is a blanket term and we're all equally privilege. Or, at least, they need to believe that to affirm their worldview. To them, equality is a racial thing; they never understand intra-white inequalities and have no real way to comprehend it. Since most people are NTs, the white NT privileges are assumed to apply to white Aspies...since most NTs of any race don't even recognize Autism as a factor.

Where have you been called a "prick" just for being white? On the Internet? Sorry you had to experience this.
