Not what I see. Tugendhat is a bit of a prat - far too trigger happy. He publicly backed the idea of expelling every Russian civilian from the country because of Ukraine and you can pretty much guarantee he'll have a stupid, reckless idea to expend British soldiers in hand when it comes to any foreign conflict. If a hot war with Russia or another Blairite Iraq-style adventure is what you want - he is the most likely to accidentally or deliberately bring about such things.

But when it comes to actual foreign policy, Tugendhat’s first-hand experience of ill-fated overseas interventionism does not seem to have furnished him with any wisdom. Instead, he is consistently one of the most hawkish members of parliament.

He rightly criticised the UK’s shambolic handling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan last year. Yet he seemed unable to offer any other solution to the then two-decades-old occupation than more of the same. He said last year that the West just needed to show a bit more ‘patience’. After 20 years of military occupation it is not clear that trying to wait out the Taliban, at tremendous social cost to Afghanistan and economic cost to the West, was ever going to work.

Tugendhat has been especially unhinged in relation to Russia. Indeed, Russia’s reprehensible invasion of Ukraine in February prompted Tugendhat to come out with some utterly deranged proposals. So while fellow Tory Remainer Tobias Ellwood was demanding a No Fly Zone over Ukraine, and Tory MP Nickie Aiken was calling on the government to ban Russian children from attending British schools, Tugendhat decided to go one step further. He told the Commons: ‘Given that a hostile state has launched an act of war, we can act now. We can freeze Russian assets in this country – all of them. We can expel Russian citizens – all of them.’

Sunak already announcing he is the man to fix the problems with the economy. He will be furious when he finds out who has been in charge of the economy for the last 2 1/2 years....

He is one of the chief enablers. I hope he gets absolutely pummelled and humiliated in these votes.

I'd hate it if Braverman became PM. She's clearly trying to curry favour from the far right section of society. Baker has probably pulled out because he just hasn't got the same amount of aggression as her so it's the next best thing for him to support her.

Pretty sure Suela Braverman is the first Attorney General that has supported breaking the law

I quite like Suella Braverman, and some people use terms like 'far right' to mean little more than 'socially conservative' these days. Her chances of winning are just about zero though - hardly anyone in the country has heard of her, and I don't think she has much of a power base in the party. I don't like Priti Patel, but wouldn't call her a Nazi - she's an enthusiastic supporter of the state of Israel for one thing.

I take your points DeepHour. I was just going off what she said about immigrants. Those things could be attractive to voters with far right values.

Whoever does take over I hope they drop the pledge to "level up".

Braverman was one of the very worst for being weirdly comfortable pushing clear lie after lie to the British public around Brexit just to get what she wanted. I don't think the country would fare well under another Boris Johnson identikit clone.

From a personality point of view I think she comes across very amateurish and doesn't cope well at all when pushed hard on subjects.

God I'm really gonna have to knuckle down and youtube these people.

Thanks for explaining Tom Tugendhat. He sounds just as bad as the rest of them really.

I'm glad Steve Baker has backed out. He's the one I was really afraid of with his extreme anti-environment views and hardline Christian extremism. He made me think he agrees with the Supreme Court's ruling on abortions. He recently said 'when I seize power'

Again, a tiny minority of the UK population will be choosing our next Prime Minister i.e. the Conservative Party membership, 100K or so? Out of a population of 68 million. This happened after Cameron, after May and now after Johnson. It is governing by the back door. We can expect this to happen ad infinitum. They elect a Conservative Party leader who by default becomes the PM. Then he/she resigns and they elect another leader, who by default becomes the PM. Then he/she resigns... See where this is going?

Argh. I need to find another subject to focus on
