Also if a person is suicidal, they're unbalanced. And if a person is unbalanced, they are a potential threat to the rest of the community. And it is the job of law enforcement to protect the community. And sometimes, people need protection from themselves.
So there are two ideals at work here, the practical (protect community) and the humanitarian (ensure well-being of distraught individual.) The cops are legally obligated to prevent loss of life, be it suicide, homicide or accidental. But of course there's only so much cops can do before they infringe on a person's civil liberties.
The police seem to enjoy being the cause of someone losing their life. Especially if, that someone is black. Cops seem to enjoy shooting black people. Cops can even kill blacks and get away with it, for the most part. So really, cops are think they're obligated to prevent loss of life only if the person is white.
There's something called suicide-by-cop, and the COPS seem to have little problem carrying it out.
Slowmutant: If you did NOT have family and friends who loved you and cared about you, this is, if you were estranged or disowned by your family would you have the same views on Suicide? Particularly when it came to YOUR life?
To me: a life alone with no one caring about you is a life that I dont find worth living. I havent the slightest doubt that those who commit suicide feel very alone and isolated.
