Sorry coming in late, but I wanted to say that I believe in God.
That is to say in the concept of God. I believe that the concept of God as an overseer and judger of man's morality is great.
You may kill someone and get away with it and hide the body from all.....but God will know.
You may steal and not get caught ....but God will know.
No matter how crafty you are in finding time to have sex with your next-door neighbours wife....he will know.
You will be judged and will pay for your sins.
Be good and no matter how bad your life is or was, you will be rewarded.
That is powerful stuff and where the laws to govern a people fail, in comes the role of God as a moral barometer.

But there is more. I have seen elderly relatives who lived their life well and were coming to the end of their days with a comfort through their pain "knowing" God would now look after them. That is a concept worthy of merit, despite belief in the actual entity itself.

KJV is not without its gaffes. I like it overall, but no translation is inspired in the technical sense. The revision rather messed up the Jerusalem Bible - New Jerusalem - what a name - is fraught with problems. I mean - change the text and keep the notes? I have known the US govt to do that, but really!.

Feel free to critique KJV readings - I do all the time - but keep Vulgate and the Greek / Hebrew on your desk for reality checks.
