If a certain city were the only good place in a country to make good use of your University degree or get one, then eventually all the smartest people would end up in that city and the dumb jocks would go somewhere where there were more jobs for them, until that city had an average IQ gap from any other city of a standard deviation or two. So is it really so crazy when people from my city, Ottawa, which is the capital of Canada and has all the federal government employees and the highest population of University educated people in the country, think they tend to be inherently smarter than people from, say, Toronto, Saskatchewan or New Found Land? Are there(or could there be) any areas where the average IQ would be something ridiculously high, like 130?

Perhaps making one's self rich is not the ultimate aim of all bright people.

The people who chose to stay in their town in New Found Land when they could've come to Ottawa would only slow down the trend. Their smart kids might come.

1) What definition are you using of intellect (achievement based, IQ, or some other)?
2) Have you searched the literature for supporting evidence?

Maybe some inherently smart people think college towns are lame.

1) I guess they'd get to the elite city based on achievement, but I'm sure these people and their kids would tend to score higher on IQ tests, generally speaking.
2) Well, I've read a theory before about the growing "autism epidemic" in California being possibly related to the fact that California is the place to go for computer related jobs in America, and so that's where computer geeks meet and breed and have aspie kids.

People don't always act rationally, even if they are 'schmot'..;) As one of the Revolutionary Frenchmen once said

"A rational army would run away"...;)

Most armies feel that way. That's why they have military police behind the lines to shoot the smart ones

Unless you had a lot of money and nothing getting in the way such as family, poverty, jobs that hardly pay then......

But I would have to question the definition of smart since there are many ways in which a person learns and adapts to their environment.

I do not want to get into a discussion here about race and IQ.

However if you are interested in the subject let me suggest that you visit http://www.vdare.com/ and http://www.lagriffedulion.f2s.com/

I only mentioned race to say that whether or not you were from the elite city would automatically mean more than race.
There, I took the racial part out because it was irrelevent to the main point. The point was about the possibility of an elite city of geniuses, or the opposite, like Texas  , which I know is a state.

Oh, a city of geniuses? Isn't that Eureka?...;) I used to work in the Pharma industry, and I'd go and fix a computer for someone in the labs, and realize...everyone in this room is smarter than me...;)

you cant make a city entirely of geniuses.

whos gonna pump your gas, and mop the floors? quantum physicians? a city by definition consists of all kinds of people.

my city is the "student city" of norway, the population is 170 000, of these 20 000 are students of the norwegian technological university (NTNU)

you go out a saturday night here, and you WILL be surrounded by stupidity and moronic bullies and "jocks" and people vomiting down your back. why?
cus its a city. 150 000 are not very student-ish.

How do you measure intelligence, just by IQ? That doesn't necessarily mean they could adapt well to a new environment and adapting is a crucial trait for survival and happiness. I wouldn't mind having some tough jocks on my team. Why would you just want a bunch of nerds? Sounds kind of boring. I like nerds but I wouldn't want a whole city of them. That sounds kind of lame. What about recreational activities? Emotional sorts are fun to be around more so than straight logical minded people. Everything in moderation I think...

If it's a choice between bright nerds and dumb emotional fanatics I prefer to live with the nerds. But of course, that's a matter of taste. And perhaps survival.

Nerds are okay as long as they are not the weasely type who are soo logical that they don't see the point in putting other's needs before their own.
I'd rather be surrounded by less intellgents who are less rational when it comes to serving their fellow man. That means, I want people with a back bone/integrity/ so that they can be emotionally connected to one another despite the fact that it may not be the most rational thing. It is far more rational/logical to just care about oneself and one's own family, but to be able to extend that sort of caring to everyone is an outstanding feature and goes beyond IQ. People with a high EQ as well as IQ would make great citizens and I'd guess they'd be very tolerant of everyone.
