Religions were founded by schizophrenics
I've been doing some research on the prehistory of religions. It seems as though shamans and prophets were schizophrenic. I was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. Actually two out of three said I didn't have it and the third one said I am on the spectrum. He also said that no one really knows what schizophrenia is. I think it's the subconscious mind working harder than the conscious or the intuitive mind is stronger than the rational mind. Albert Einstein said that the intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is its faithful servant.
When I was a kid I was more autistic but I think those traits are gone now because I worked very hard at healing myself. Plus, I was thrown in with a bunch of NT's growing up and I had to sink or swim. I'm telling you all this because I don't want people to think I'm just making negative judgments on religions or that I'm trolling. I studied many religions and still am fascinated by it all. But, I can't help to think that much of it is just wrong while some of it is profound and very real.
About 2 percent of the population is able to go in and out of altered states of consciousness at will. It is a gift but it can also be very negative if the visions are not properly analyzed by the rational mind. People used to hold schizophrenics in high regard as they were the priestesses, oracles, and priests of the societies. Often times oracles were used by politicians and heads of state. Schizophrenics have a strong intuitive mind but modern society values the rational mind more which now has displaced these different thinking types. Religions are set now but in the past they were formed by people who held their beliefs as if they were facts due to the fact that enough people believed their beliefs.
I'd guess that since schizophrenics tend to come up with some bizarre and unreal beliefs, make wrong connections and so forth that the religions also contain a high rate of inaccuracy. Many schizophrenics claim to be plagued by demons and such. Actually, one of the criteria for schizophrenia is that the person has a preoccupation with religions or spiritual matters. We still cling to religions that claim that demons and angels exist but at the same time it is believed that if anyone claims to have made some sort of divine contact with these entities, then these people are crazy.
Jesus would be considered a schizophrenic if he was analyzed by a modern day psychiatrist. Even if he performed miracles the doctors would say that it was a placebo effect or that it was just coincidental.

Religions are a multifaceted phenomena with many diverse roots and functions in society. It is dangerous and probably violently simplified to try to nail them down to a single cause. No doubt deranged people probably played a role on their development as did politics, scammers, masses of frightened and confused and gullible people, and people genuinely curious about the general nature of the universe. It is a fascinating social stew.
As with every establishment there are many roots. From my own research, I believe that schizo's were the main culprit to the organized religions that we know of today. Oracles had lots of power way back when. Once someone got something right and flabbergasted a politician, they gained way too much confidence in that particular oracle. Think of Joseph and how he influenced a whole society with his dream interpretation.

I have read that Greek oracles inhabited caves that had cracks in the floor from which emanated gases which temporarily drove them dotty. Thereupon they mouthed all manner of mysterious nonsense which no doubt impressed gullible witnesses.
Well, it is pretty common for shamans to take hallucinogenics to open the portal so to speak. Caves contain high amounts of negative ions which also tend to alter the consciousness. The ocean also gives off lots of negative ions to bring about that state of oneness. Ever notice how surfers are so relaxed and in tune with nature? Nature gives off the spirit to which these thinking types respond to.

There is still something of an urban legend that connects genius with insanity and perhaps supernatural ability. The only logic, it seems to me, is that odd viewpoints create emotional and social difficulties.

Read this book "The evolving brain" by R. Grant Steen. It's not an urban legend. Look up what I told Orwell to look up. It's an easy search.
Oh and there was a study at the University of Minn. that went on about psi ability in autistics. It's interesting. I'll try to find it. It's either MN or MI.

Because geniuses may be misfits it's a mistake to assume misfits are geniuses.
It's also a mistake to say it's all or nothing. I believe there are parts of the brain that can infuse information at an extraordinary rate. It needs to be refined, and taught in our culture because we are humans and we learn from one another. No one should have to go it alone. Isolation can drive a normal person mad. NT's are lucky because they have group support and guidance. We are just misfits because there is no banning togetherness, no knowledge being passed down, no interpretive skills to the visions because only 2 to 3% of the population thinks in this abstract subconscious manner. One can be alone amongst many people if he/she is misunderstood. Although, shamans do tend to accept the fact that they are alone. It's part of the initiation process as is healing oneself is also an initiation rite. But then again many shamans die during this process or lose their minds.

Although I enjoy the comic idiocy of participating in this site I grew up alone and got to appreciate it. I prefer being alone with the exception, perhaps of my pet sparrow and the flocks of ducks and seagulls I feed each evening. There is no animal I know outside of humans that enjoys mutilating, torturing and killing other living things for pleasure alone. This is beyond my understanding.
Yes, that is the account of the Oracle at Delphi, although it is not clear whether these gases or fumes were purely natural, or came from humans heating some type of mineral or herbal substance.
Priests or Priestesses interpreted the visions and mumblings, and usually gave a cryptic, open ended statements. The value of the I Ching or some other oracular tool is not in predicting the future (it cant), but in helping people think outside the box they have created.
Other shamanic/religious practices involve inducing altered states of consciousness - from the Eleusinian Mysteries to the Soma of the Vedas, to fasting/praying/meditation ... it all involves exploring different ways of thinking.
The rites, ceremonies, and beliefs were kept secret, as initiation was believed to unite the worshipper with the gods and included promises of divine power and rewards in the afterlife.[4] There are many paintings and pieces of pottery that depict various aspects of the Mysteries. Since the Mysteries involved visions and conjuring of an afterlife, some scholars believe that the power and longevity of the Eleusinian Mysteries came from psychedelic agents.

Or not thinking.
i think the first spirituality would have coincided w first signs of art, the creation of "what isnt there"
heaven/a second realm
spirit/a second body
a statue/a second manifestation of a person
an amulet/a second manifestation of a concept
art is traced 175 000 years back
homo sapiens is traced 200 000 years back
i wonder
how old alcohol and hallucinogenics are traced back. and i wouldnt be surprised if they coincide as well.

I don't know when the first mystical or hallucinogenic state occurred. Interesting question though.
Schizophrenic types often are capable of entering into ecstatic states at will but it is not always manageable. They can be brought about spontaneously but most of the time it is induced during extreme suffering, near death experiences, hallucinogenics, fasting, dancing, drumming, and long hours of meditation. After a spontaneous experience it makes you want to explore it more so doing hallucinogenics gives you that vehicle to get back in that state and return to where you left off so you can learn more and so forth. Just like dreams these visions need to be interpreted.
