Organizations like "Vote or Die" concentrate on getting more people to vote, without actually getting them involved more in politics, especially state and local governance.

This election proved that even if you vote for someone that is closest to your political ideology, your candidate will still maintain the country as business as usual.

Post ways you can be involved in government, without voting. Because the only political activity most Americans do is vote.

Hunt down politicians.
Start violent riots.
Commit acts of terrorism.
Host massive rallies including book burnings.
Preach disaster if candidates do not vote for your favorite policies.
Etc.

Own stock and make sure to attend holder meetings/voice your opinion in those meetings.

So far we have the left wing revolutionary approach advocated by AG, and the traditional right wing method of influencing government mentioned by skafather.

Skafather's seems to be more successful in general, but both approaches certainly have the potential to be successful.

And I've actually been employed and living on my own. Living in the real world and working in a large multinational gives you interesting perspective when you have interests like ours. Not that I'm a fan of the method I proposed but it's, by far, more effective than any methods proposed.

Vote or die backfired for the liberal cause in that it also mobilized undereducated/ignorant lower class/impoverished people, mostly minorities in California who ended up voting in favor of prop 8 and banning gay marriage. WHOOPS!! !

Now if the method had been taken to start an initiative from within a corporation, say, like Disney to provide the facts on the pragmatic benefits of keeping homosexual marriage legalized, you probably could have swayed some of the middle of the road undecided voters without mobilizing the unwashed/uneducated masses.

But then again, Mormon hands were so deep into that proposition that you can only find the video on torrents under "double fisted insertion".

How about visiting a session or your legislature and once there let out the biggest smelliest fart you can manage. That is free expression, it will briefly affect government and it does not involve voting.

Start or join a lobby for whatever. Success almost guaranteed in the US.

Write an article about an issue you're really interested in, or perhaps get involved in a political organization.
