Culture is interesting if you look at it like an anthropologist. I'm sorry it has affected you, but you are still so young. My advice: travel, gain novel experiences, live and love and be happy. You are so young and have no attachments. You gotta explore and learn a lot. Go collect some rocks and pray, have the balls to say f**k you, i luv you richardbenson.

Of course society has affected me. I'm not the one who made the thread to cry about it tho.

I enjoy a small container of yogurt once in a while but I cannot claim it was the ruination of my life.

What do you mean by the word "culture"?

Being an anthropology student (and at my university, there's archeology as a bonus ^.- ), culture is basicly nothing more than ways copied from one person which lives on after his departure (This include sciences, litterature, cooking, traditions, etc.). It's kind of unique to humans as well. Some other primates can mimic or have very rudimentary culture traits though, there was the story of an amadrias baboon in Japan who found out that washing the potatoes s/he was given tasted better if it was washed in water (Less dirt overall), afterwards members of her community started copying her. <.<

Oh and hey Magnus, we can talk about shamanism if you want. There's a dude in some of my classes who "studies" to be one (having talked with him, he sounds like he would somewhat fit in ^^; ). Anyways, we're bound to speak about it moreover during my "anthropology of religion" class this season. <.<

Culture is what connects one to the other people in the society or community into which he has been born. Language is the first cultural artifact acquired, after which comes custom and morals. I human cannot exist as a human without some kind of culture, so how can culture ruin anyone?

Overdose of information (As in, you should know full well you'll never learn everything you'd want to learn in your one lifetime)? Fashion "victim"? Consumerism (related to previous)? <.< Keeping yourself up-to-date (Don't lie, it is a necessity but it is quite bothersome to do so unless you're motivated, otherwise lazyness settles in)?

The question "is culture a good thing?" might seem a bit strange, but I think it is interesting.

The cultural values of society are often dictated to the majority by a minority (especially so in the modern world with its mass media). Ideally the cultural output of a society would reflect the sensibilities of the members of that society. The question then for any given society is whether or not that is the case. To what extent are the people with the power to dictate the cultural output of a given society motivated by any sense of loyalty towards the masses of that society who are influenced by that cultural output?

As for talking like a gangster, I sometimes do that too, but I try not to!
I sometimes wonder what TV has done to my mind.

I'm guessing richardbenson has been exposed to Christian media which uses "the culture" as a pejorative term for everything that isn't inside their (narrow) definition of a Christian lifestyle.

I tend to think of culture as synonymous with "high culture", like the arts and intellectual discourse, so the word has a positive connotation for me. I steer clear of "pop culture" stuff like the Jersey Shore phenomenon because I find it distasteful, so my answer to the OP would be "No, it hasn't ruined me."

Yes, I do feel as if I've been affected by culture. I love making fun of the more ridiculous aspects of American culture... can we say Jersey Shore anyone?

I do feel blind as to whether I've taken in the good or bad aspects of our culture, though. I can't tell for some reason... Can't say if it's a positive or negative affect though.
