I have been wandering around the web today, mainly into forums and discussion groups that are concerned with geology and tectonic plate movement...mainly of these highly educated folks take the *pole shift* theory damn seriously. And some believe we may see it occur within the next 50 years. Afew are proponents of the *fast pole shift* theorems, in which it is stated that a massive pole shift could occur in as short as ten years. It may have happened in the past, so they say. Most are cautioning against visiting any area that has active or near-active volcanos, as they suspect we are overdue for one to *burp*...the volcanic activity can be put on the fast track by earthquake activity.
The person didn't say whether it's the MAGNETIC pole, or whether the earth will actually flip over. Magnetic pole is bad enough, but if the earth flips over, that would be devastating. Sounds like a GREAT disaster movie.

Then again, it might be an expectation that the great creative and dynamic qualities of the Polish nation will burst out and give this dull world a flash of their inherent genius.
Talk to the Polish chick over in General Discussion, she actually wants to migrate to GERMANY! Wow. Any people who can make an aspie embrace their blood enemies is nasty.

Magnetic pole flip.
The moment of inertia and the conservation of angular momentum would make it impossible for anything but a massive star going by to flip the earth to a different axis of rotation.
Work out the moments of inertia for the planet and you will see that this is so.

Well we'd all be dead wouldn't we? Like the volcanic ash would block out the sun and the air would be poisonous or something. No use worrying about it I guess.
Just you never mind. Go on worrying.
I don't know what you mean by that but if a polar shift is going to happen there is nothing that can be done to stop it can it?

At the moment our current technology is a bit weak in that area, but if your emotional drift is to worry, feel free.
uh...magnetic pole shift...yeah, actual flip, ain't gonna happen. Though I know a guy at work that's convinced that the rotation of the Earth has changed during recorded history...
The pole shift has taken place several times throughout the life of the Earth...it used to be they hated Germany, now it's Russia...![]()

I am a graduate student in geology, so I feel I have something to contribute here, namely to debunk the notion that the earth's magnetic field will suddenly go haywire any time soon and we flee in horror. While it is true that the earth's magnetic field has decreased slightly (as that is what typically does happen during the beginning of a reversal), there are a lot of unknowns about the inner workings of the liquid outer core (the source region of the magnetic field). It is entirely possible that the decrease could continue and herald the beginning of a reversal, but it is equally possible -- or perhaps more likely so -- that the decrease is just small fluctuations that naturally occur within a current magnetic regime.
Regarding the issue of volcanoes (my specialty), how does volcanic eruptions signal a magnetic field shift when the source-region of magma is in the mantle and not the liquid outer core? It doesn't. Also it is quite precarious to append the term "overdue" to volcanic eruptions (but that's for another post).
I don't know the source of the blog that the OP linked to (its generally not advised to quote material without citing the specific source), but it is quite evident that mainstream media and Hollywood has succeeded in indoctrinating fear and chaos in society. For more information and enlightenment, please read this blog post by a well-respected geologist.
