Samaritans or Jews: Who are Correct?

Were the Samaritans correct in regarding Mount Gerizim as having been the location chosen by Yahweh for a holy temple? Or, were the Jews correct in choosing Jerusalem?

Jesus said that the time would come when nobody would worship on either place, but that all would worship the Father in spirit and in truth.

But historically, I have to say, the Jews had the historical continuity... the Samaritans only picked their place after the dividing of the Kingdoms. However, I really do like the fact that Jesus took away that sectarian divide when He spoke to the Samaritan woman at the well.

There are only a few hundred Samaritans left--about 1/2 of them live in Israel, and 1/2 in West Bank Palestine. They will probably become extinct eventually. Which would suggest that the Jews will soon come to have the upper hand in the argument.

But, are there any arguments in favor of the Samaritans versus the Jews as being correct either in terms of being God's Chosen People, or in terms of the correct place for worshipping God?

The Gospels tend to give a much gentler and more positive treatment to the Samaritans than the Jews.
