And in case you're curious - the US corn that replaced Mexico's internal produce was subsidized by the US government.

If capitalism were operative in Mexico, then another product would be produced in place of corn. Wait! Another product is produced in place of corn. Canibus!
If Mexico had a sane economy (it doesn't) having a single crop outcompeted because of subsidy would not damage the economy.

Still love how the US whines and complains and throws a temper tantrum when anyone complains about NAFTA violations (even if they're not real), but has no problem with violating them itself.
example... Canadian government doesn't charge as much to cut softwood lumber from government lands as the US does... They interpret that as a subsidy.
But there isn't a subsidy involved in that corn, now is there? (officially that is)

I am in no way claiming the PRI's nationalist program was in anyway sane, rational, or farsighted. But if American Agrobusiness were in anyway socially responsible and were US trade bureaucrats fair, they'd have foresaw the disaster that one-sided "free trade" would produce and not dump corn on the Mexican market. Instead, they'd allow the Mexican domestic economy to diversify during a period of regulated, sustainable, international trade.

Domestic farm subsidies are still a pretty big issue in America. I'm not sure how much of the subsidized corn is exported, but I'd assume some of it still is.
