...can't find a homeless shelter, and you know that there is food in prison, wouldn't the normal thing to do is to commit a minor crime serious enough to put you in jail but at the same time not hurt any person?

So according to this statement, no person in a developed country should ever be malnourished. All you need to do is go into a supermarket, take some food or stuff, make sure the cashier sees that you are stealing, and wait for the cops to come and arrest you.

Sadly, I came to the conclusion long ago (after working in a state prison) that IF I was so bad off that I was living in the streets and effectively unable to care for myself, I'd walk into a bank, fake having a gun, and gladly go to prison.

Three hots and a cot...free medical care. Better deal than being destitute and homeless on the street.

Can't say for sure I'd actually do it, but pragmatically, it's very, very tempting.

Well I would probably steal food until i got caught, upon which I would then enjoy the benefits of prison. After all, stealing is wrong and I must be punished. Soft, warm, delicious punishment.

Yes, but can you live with the other inmates? Certainly not all of them may be nice to you and you'll have no where to go.

I'd ask the supermarket if i could work for 1-2 hours and select a few pieces of food as payment.

My sisters ex BF wanted some new parts for his computer but had no money, he did something similar and ended up being hired permanently as a store tech and were eventually put in charge for their logistics department.

I would steal my food but try not to get caught. I wouldn't want to be in prison.

Well there are homeless shelters and soup kitchens and what not so it's a hard question to answer. Most homeless people are either drug addicts or mentally ill and probably have some living relatives that care about them. Sometime jail can get help for these people. A healthy person wouldn't ever find themselves in a situation like this since they would be able to help themselves. I can see the appeal of having someone take care of you when you cannot but no thanks to jail/prison if there any other possible options.

OK... True story...

I used to date this girl whose grandmother was fairly destitute. Not HOMELESS, but she didn't really have much extra money, suffered from Parkinson's (with mild symptoms), was affected somewhat mentally (at one time addicted to presrip anti-depressants), but otherwise OK. What SHE would do was wait for the local grocery, which was only maybe about 2 blocks away, to throw out their "fresh" produce and then raid the dumpster for free food.

Bizarre, but effective.

Dumpster diving, in general, is very effective.

You should see how much popcorn movie theaters throw out. Enough to feed a few families.

Sometimes the homeless shelters get full.

What will happen in the near future when America can no longer afford to pay unemployment benefits and welfare and food stamps?

It is going to get really nasty.

Yes, provided that the government has the money to pay for these projects.

And if they don't?

I'd try to live it on the streets for as long as i could. I'm not a person who can sit in one place for long and prison would be madness for me. I'd grab On the Road by Jack Keroac and hit the road maybe.
