Plutocrats loved him because he basically threw a party for the rich, massively distributing income upwards.

The public (or, at least, signifcant sectors of it) love him because the plutocrats who loved him launched a massive advertising campaign. His naive overoptimism was also something America wanted after decades of bland Democratic realism.

I am, of course, refering to the image of Reagan here. Donald Regan was the real President, Ronald Reagan was merely the actor who played President.

He was funny on Futurama

He had the gift of making people feel he was on their side.

And he did have the good fortune to be president when the Berlin wall came down.

It was a much less divisive time, when a Republican could do what he personally believed even if it wasn't totally in toe with the party line. For better or for worse, he did accomplish things, and with a Democratically controlled congress, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, I'd say more on the "for worse" side. He accomplished the brutalization of Nicaraguan civillians by terrorists who smuggled narcotics back into the US as he waged his infamous war against the (poor) drug users.

He massively redistributed wealth upwards, projected overoptimism, and destroyed the social welfare system to replace it with a full-blown corporate welfare state. His inequality exaccerbating policies provided the context for the global recession (interestingly, financial meltdown due to Wall Street stupidity also occured on his watch).

100% all about sex. Reagan is the sex God of the Republican party. They might deny it, but if you press them enough on the issue, every Republican will admit that he finds Reagan sexy, and possibly even fantasizes about him. I think it is just part of being Republican.

He knew how to build castles in the air, complete with an all white, all straight, all affluent, Evangelical society living there. He made it safe and fashionable to espouse the notion that race bating, gay bashing, and blaming the poorest and most vulnerable for poverty in our country were okay, as long as you hide your rhetoric in uplifting, patriotic crap. That has always appealed to the "haves" in the Republican party, as well as the crackers who vote against their own interests for the sake of family values.

The Democrats, of course, have their idiots as well, but the Republicans seem to have an innate talent for sending leaders to Washington to vandalize whatever ideals the US believes it stands for. Hoover, Nixon, Reagan, and the two Bushes are standard Republican Tyrannosaurus Rex members of the species. Eisenhower was no angel but he has a bit more personal integrity.

It's because he was one of the few people who had the balls to engage the Soviet Union, and signal the end of the Cold War (even though a lot of it occurred under Bush Sr.'s watch).
