Top Iraq general: U.S. army 'must stay' until 2020

Being in a constant state of war is important for retaining high level of control over the people.

/This is the war that never ends; yes it goes on and on, my friends. Some people started it not knowing what it was; and now we're all stuck with it just because.

The Iraqi government is concerned about whether they'll be able to stand on their own two feet, but that does not change the American government's plans. We are on track to withdraw completely by the end of next year.

War in perpetuity has been the game plan since before 2000. Be it Iraq or elsewhere.

I thought war in perpetuity was the game plan since the beginning of (un)civilization.

Has anyone suggested a way out of Iraq that makes sense? I mean, making Iraq transition to a stable peaceful regime that respects human rights? Not that I think that the Americans would be terribly interested in achieving this, but I would be interested to know if someone somewhere has proposed a plan that can work.

Pretty hard to propose a viable way to achieve the impossible. And there is nothing more impossible than imposing a modernized Christian version of peace upon an ultra-traditional Muslim nation. Square peg in a round hole comes to mind.

Sure, I have a perfect method:
1) Kill all current citizens, or at least most.
2) Colonize Iraq with Americans and make it a territory of the US government.

Yeah... you can send all the christian fundies over there. Would be a great way to get rid of 'em.

Legally we have no choice. The status of forces agreement signed by both the U.S. (during the late Bush administration and maintained in the current administration) requires that we be out according to the terms. Any difference would have to be negotiated by both the U.S. and the Iraqi government. No such negotiations are underway and I seriously doubt if Lord Obama would commit our troops to another ten years in Hell. If he did so, he would surely be out of the running in 2012.

I don't know about 2020 but the war will certainly continue until the 'economic crisis' is over............and based on the rate of money printing in the US, this crisis will NEVER end :!:

When we leave Iraq, I suspect it will be because we're starting/escalating a war elsewhere. The drums are beating big time with Iran and North Korea. We'll be in Afghanistan/Pakistan for a long time as well.

Obama will need his war as much as FDR needed a war in Europe to rescue our economy. It is the only chance for Lord Obama to be re-elected.

Both of these point apply to Afganistan even more than to Iraq.

Perhaps you're confusing Iraq with the Taliban or Saudi Arabia. The problem in Iraq isn't religion, it's about a group of people with no national pride or unity (Kurds, Sunnis, Shiites). The Kurds manage to keep their part much safer than the rest of Iraq, but among the people who thrived during Saddam's regime, there's this mentality of going along with whoever is in charge (or just on their doorstep with a gun), they see their friends getting shot in the street and they look away in hopes that they're not next. Sure many individuals don't fit this mold, but there are enough of them doing this to make it a problem.

Why is it the concern of the USA what a bunch of religious maniacs do to each other in a couple of ineffective states? Americans are being killed at huge expense far away from any way they can harm the USA. Whether or not they behave nicely and have a democratic form of government is their own business and not worth the senseless killing and high financial cost to the USA.

Because we were dragged into creating the power vacuum that now serves as the massive problem in the region. Which is why the UN banned such actions of deposing leaders without FULL UN support and why Powell's presentation was supposed to be so important and why the WMD's were supposed to be so important. If it weren't for the US being on the permanent security counsel, our leaders would have been put on trial for war crimes and most likely locked up at the Hague with all the other war criminals.
