Yeah, unless her speech was "Energy, Tax, Lift American Spirits", I really don't see why people are making a big fuss about this. I mean, seriously? You're complaining that she wrote down the tiniest of reminders on her hand?

I memorized a five minute speech for a class once. I obsessed about it for a week. Most of the other students could not do it. They had to have the entire paper there as a reminder. A few words as a reminder really should not be that big of a deal, especially given what seems to me to be the reason why.

The problem with Palin is hypocrisy, for starters. Secondly, there's the Cenk hypothesis that the questions were pre-selected and that she needed labels like "energy" to associate scripted answers with scripted questions.

Most people don't have eidetic memory or even a strong long-term memory and few have whole weeks to prepare for a speech. Which is why teleprompters, notecards, and the like are pretty common.

Actually, his argument seemed to be much more focused on, "She's a third grader!"

And explain the hypocrisy, please. I don't think anyone should be bashing Obama for reading off a teleprompter (although as I stated in the other thread, the presence of the teleprompter may not be the issue so much as the READING of it), but five words on a hand =/= a teleprompter.

Edit: Actually, a president with an eidetic memory would probably be pretty good, rather than having to be reminded of things before making a decision, and possibly being able to make connections that others, without such knowledge readily available to them, cannot make.

Isn't this old news? I thought the usual suspects were snickering about this months ago, even the White House was getting in on the fun...

Aside from being a non-story I think this whole thing helped Palin; it allows her side another shot at Obama about his use of the teleprompter, burnishes her "folksy" image, and it sets the Dems up for the elitist charge when they trot out the hillbilly blackberry and redneck PDA jokes. If she didn't set this in motion intentionally she should have, it didn't hurt her with her base, plus it lets her run wild with the backlash.

No, that was the hyperbolic rhetorical dressing. The main argument was that she was given soft-ball questions which she was probably coached for in advance and still needed notes to remind here of the scripted answers. AND THEY WERE PRETTY FOOLISH NOTES - honestly, if you can't remember that you need to talk about lifting American spirits, then there's little hope for you.



Reading a prepared speech (she did glance down at the paper) and then needing crib notes for the softest of questions is being very scripted. To turn around and criticize Obama (who doesn't use a teleprompter for Press conference questions) for reading his prepared statements is the heigh of hypocrisy.



My whole point was that only someone with eidetic memory could read an entire speech that was prepared without communication aids.

So the revelation that Palin uses communication aids to answer softball questions strengthens her criticism that Obama's unprecedented for using communication aids to deliver precisely-worded speeches?

It really seems more like a reminder of when, rather than what to me.

i'm so slow. i'm still trying to figure out what that thing was on george 43's back during one of his debates. there was certainly something weird there. i'm guessing it was a transmitter/receiver that sent rf to a intra- canal device in one of his ears so he could get info from his supervisor, karl rove.
maybe, just maybe, it is a parasitic techno-core cross that provided resurrection to the believers ala dan simmon's hyperion. dick , his daddy, certainly has one with as many hearts as he's gone through. of course, with his newest incarnation that leaves him with no pulse, cheny may well have entered an additional realm of existence.

I still think there's a chance the Republican Congress (yes, they're going to win majorities in the November election) can screw up by doing excessive, Clinton-era, investigations into the Obama Whitehouse.

Nope, that's not what I said; I'm not sure how you tortured that meaning out of my post but that's a differnt thread.
I could be wrong since I don't pay too much attention to Palin in general, but I don't think she's even been one of the people making a bunch of noise about the teleprompter. Even those that have been making a stink about the prompter aren't harping on any precedent, but are using the disparity between Obabma's pre-scripted speeches vs his often awkward off the cuff remarks to suggest that he may give a great speech but doesn't do so well when forced into going off script. Thus, when people mock Palin for writing speech cues on her hand, she (or those who speak for her) get to take a free shot at Obama by pointing out that she's not relying on canned oratory, AND they get to point to the mockers themselves as evidence of media bias and liberal elitism.

Quite simple - I assumed you knew the facts (namely, that Bozo Palin's speech incorporated insults against Obama's method of reading prepared speeches which she herself read off prepared notecards or some other communication aid - see here glancing below every once in a while here).

The whole reason I've brought up this old bit of schadenfreude is because another thread brought up the trite Obama prompter non-issue, so I decided to note how widespread the use of prepared statements is among politicians.

And, actually, Palin is somebody who brings up Obama's use of teleprompters. She did it in the very speech preceding her Q&A session where she used crib notes (Obama, generally speaking, doesn't use notes or prompters when answering questions). While I think financial sector fraud is a bigger issue then the method of someone's delivery, the amount of GOP stupidity over "prompter-gate" is just too much to ignore.

Furthermore, Obama doesn't need prepared statements when answering questions or conducting interviews. While he may not give speeches extemporaneously, neither did Bush (who read them off notecards) or Palin (who read her GOP convention speech off a teleprompter and - as you can see from the video - glanced down at lecture notes throughout the Tea Party convention speech. You should also note that it takes a lot more focus, attention, and skill to read a teleprompter than it does to read off paper notes (explaining more gaffes when the prompter malfunctions) and that every TV anchor and pundit - Glenn Beck included - uses a teleprompter.

There is a vast difference between having crib notes and a teleprompter.

A teleprompter feeds you your lines word-for-word. Crib notes reminds you of the points you wish to cover in the order you should address them.

A smart person has some notes at hand. A dumb person needs someone to feed him his speech.

So where did I say that getting caught looking at her palm enhances the teleprompter related arguments? What I said was that it allows the prompter to be brought up again in criticizing Obama, I didn't say it bolstered that argument in any way.



Well duh, even the dullest knives in the PPR drawer caught that one. Like I said before though, the issue being raised isn't about who uses or has used a teleprompter, but rather an oblique attack on a a perceived strength of Obama's, to wit his oratory skills. It's political Jujitsu, turning a rivals strength into a weakness, and completely legitimate as a political tactic.



Sounds like you pay more attention to Sarah Palin that I do...



As usual, you can't seem to distinguish discussion or explanation and advocacy; I could care less who uses a teleprompter and why, I simply don't like seeing distortions being made about what is being said.
