I am speaking about Autostereograms. All my life, I have tried and tried to make them work. But they do not. No, they don't.

Thus I have reached the conclusion that the emperor is naked. In other words, those things DO NOT work. But some people claim it does work so they don't look stupid.

So, what do you think? Is the emperor naked? Have you ever been able to make one of those work?

Is that image a dolphin or a shark? I can't tell.

They do work. It's a little tricky, I admit, especially if you're not sure how to look at these things. You have to deliberately not focus on them while you're looking-- imagine you're looking past the image, and don't let your eyes focus on the picture, as unnatural as that feels.

What emperor? I saw some mammalian blob in a horizontal position. It did not look particularly human.

They don't work for some people with eye coordination issues.

It is a shark. I cheated!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Stere ... pthmap.png

well, I found two ways of look at it, one is focusing the eyes past the image, rather than over the image, what I do to get the 3d image, is that I put my face near the monitor screen, about 2.5 inches, then stare at the picture without trying to focus on it and relax the eyes, until the 3d image appears. The other way is crossing your eyes, at a normal distance, which seems easier for me, but the 3d perspective is reversed and it doesn't look that good in that way.

It is a reference to a tale called the Emperor's new clothes: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Empero ... ew_Clothes

Getting close is the key for me. It's some kind of fish but the tail is not shark-like.

I'm pretty sure it's a Great White.

The easiest way to see it...

Put your eyes about 10 inches away from the screen. At this distance you should have to strain to keep focused on the pattern. Now just stop straining. Relax and let the image go blurry/double. Now, keeping totally relaxed without moving your eyes or attempting to refocus, slowly move the screen back away from your face (or slowly move your head back away from the screen if you aren't on a laptop). The 3D image should emerge once you are a certain distance away from the screen.

Yep, that's the trick. Most of the time I can get them, but this one's just giving me a headache.
