With the 2010 election coming up, I've been thinking about political issues.
Despite the Democrats being pretty bad in a lot of ways I have a hard time disliking them anywhere near as much as I do the Republican Party, especially in its current form. Candidates like O'Donnell, Angle, and Paul are some of the most unlikable I've ever seen. I pretty much dislike everything the party stands for and says.
It seems a lot of the Republican Party's social positions are inherently contradictory with their economic ones. If abortion was illegal, then you'd have a bigger population and a lot of those people would be on welfare. And if someone's just getting an abortion because they're an irresponsible ass who doesn't feel like raising a kid, then they probably won't turn out to be much of a parent and crime rates will probably go up.
Republican positions on crime aren't so logical either. I'm not completely against the death penalty but with legal costs the death penalty is more expensive than a life sentence. The often ridiculous drug laws have miserably failed and cost a lot of money too.
Then there's the deficit. Republicans complain about the deficit, but Republicans haven't cut the deficit in a long time. Nowadays they seem to prefer cutting taxes but still spending a lot. Cutting taxes and lowering the deficit would be really hard and the spending cuts that would be required would probably never pass.
If anything the Tea Party type candidates's positions are even more ridiculous. Rand Paul thinks businesses should be able to choose to be whites only. I'm sure that would improve the economy a lot(actually it would lead to more failed businesses, more vandalized or destroyed businesses, and various other problems). And even if Paul is just really anti-government power and not racist, that makes me wonder why the hell he'd run for a government job with government health care if he hates the government so much. Also, he ran as a fringe candidate but immediately whored himself out to the Republican establishment as soon as he won the nomination.
Christine O'Donnell...everybody knows she's an idiot at this point. But I don't know how people who are worried about the economy nominated a woman who can't pay her mortgage, taxes, or campaign costs in the first place. And as for Angle, I don't think a woman who uses quote marks when saying autism should be anywhere near our health care.
I don't know if the Democrats have done much good or if they deserve re-election. But I'm astounded to see so much of the voting public willing to go back to politicians that are encouraging the same policies or even dumber ones than the policies that screwed the country for years. Also confused to see people who think the economic problems can be blamed on the Democrats without any of it going to the Republicans. The people who are really responsible for the problems are all the corrupt corporate bastards. Some of them have certainly been on the Democrat's side(Freddie Mac and Fanni but others are on the Republican's.
I don't know why we only have two viable parties, and the country may be screwed no matter which one is in charge.
