... would the purchase of the planet Mars be?

If it were possible to buy the planet Mars, how long of a time would probably elapse before a return on investment would be likely to occur?

Depends. If I got it for a $1 trillion and I sold acres of land on it to NASA for $500 billion each, I'd make my investment back quite quickly :P

i think purchasing march would be profoundly stupid because you can't do anything with it and if you could the government would do something with it before you could they'd take it from you. although you really cant take a planet.

If I purchased March, I think I'd charge everyone rent for being in the month with me. But, yes, it is possible to take the planet Mars - but only in the sense of getting there, settling there, and arming it to the teeth. If another entity, like a government or a business, wanted to take it, they could but only if they could either economically or militarily overcome the people to first settle there successfully.
