So a Beck
If ANYBODY gets the crosscultural reference in the topic line, I will ship you my Hebrew etymological dictionary. You do not have to specify the dialect, just the general section of the relevant country.
But that said:
Glenn Beck. Being who and what I am, I know very little about the guy. I know he has been running meetings, I know he is a Mormon, I know the Anointed love him almost as much as they loved Mr Bush, admire him not quite as much as Ms Palin. [Is she distantly related to George. Monty?]
What he actually says or does I do not know.
But he must be doing SOMETHING right.
Today I was listening to the radio, tuned in to a station in a nearby town that is - well, shall we say, a tad conservative. They tend to see neocons as dangerous liberals, and the Conservative Baptists are not QUITE as Christian as they should be. I tune in once in a while to see what they are het up about.
Frankly, I am perturbed that they consider themselves Christians - and that they likely would not count me, Natty Boh, AngelRho or 91 as Christians - dangerous heretics we are. But you can't find out about what rightist weirdos are doing in the Times - so I check on them. Like reading pgd's Knock Knocks.
So - to the point - these guys on the super right despise - hate - fear Glen Beck. Allee same like the Anointed Progressives. He is bad. He is a threat.
Me - I have realized over the years, if two extreme groups who hate one another's guts abhor me - then I must be where I need to be.
So if the We are So Christian radio show dislikes GB as much as the Anointed - well, good chance he is not too far off base.
Even the extremes are "doing something right"; they're just fixating on it to the exclusion/distortion of every single other thing. Beck's no exception. What is it this group hates/fears about him?

abaissse -
I have heard nothing negative about GB from anyone I trust. Have never expoerienced him directly, of course.
Natty Boh - apparently, GB is to them one of several very bad people - I should make that VBP and use it consistently - the list includes Muslims, something called the New Apostolic Reformation, the Purpose Driven Church people, New Agers, Liberation Theology types, Mormons generally [Beck is singled out], old Uncle Tom Cobbley and all. They are bad because they mix in socialist doctrines - fixing society instead of preaching the gospel - and Eastern religious practices - some of them are into contemplative prayer. AND they talk about - shades of Revelation, and I can't say why they do not mention the Antichrist, unless there are just too many people on the list - fixing the place up so we have the kingdom of God on earth.
Which is bad. I have to admit I do not know why it would be that bad, but it must be pretty bad.
These people are more polite than Sand, but they are just as catholic - excuse it, it is the right word here - in their fear and disgust as he is. They seem to rotate - I doubt it is conscious or that formalized, but they kind of have an arch enemy of the month, and right now it is Beck.

i encourage you to look up and watch some clips of his show. this is a relatively mild clip where he details how the current turmoil in egypt is secretly a plot to turn the entire world muslim.

Glenn Beck is either a raving lunatic, or a rank opportunist who taken up the role of Messiah of the ignorant, uninformed, and generally hateful - or he's both. These days, he's trafficking in the conspiracy theories of the American left, international communism, and radical Islam working together to establish a world wide Muslim Caliphate based in ancient Babylon (which is the real reason why in both gulf wars, neither president Bush allowed the ruins to be bombed
). Anyhow, that's why he's gotten people riled up about supporting Mubarak against The Muslim Brotherhood bogeyman (it'll take too long to explain it all to make sense).
As for this particular faction of the religious right opposing Beck - well, Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood, and Al Queda all hate each other, so I guess the lunatic fringe in the is country can hate each other, too.

Doing the watch the clip thing is very difficult for me and I rarely make the effort.
If I were interested enough [which frankly is very rare in the case of people who get noticed by politicians] I would anyway watch a full show, not a clip out of context.
This is not direct response, but may be relevant. Many years ago, a colleague - a good friend I respected - said [literally in passing] that if Pat Robertson were elected president it would be the worst possible disaster. I was at the time just as apolitical as I am now and was in the 60s, and I was safely and happily NOT a theist of any sort.
A few years later I took in a couple of PR's shows. My mother in law was into him at the time and we were living with her. Big surprise - here is this not real impressive guy, talking some stuff I can not buy into any more than I can what, say, Oprah spouts - but no big radical end of civilization as we know it stuff. No particular charisma, no more idiocy than you get from anybody talking politics on TV.
The reaction to GB sounds exactly the same as my learned friend's venomous fear of PR. Which of the two is more demonic?
He's either crazy or unbalanced in some way. He's certainly uneducated.
But people are getting tired of his routine. Last year he pulled in 3 million each night and now he rarely breaks 2 million. So nightly he's getting about 0.5% of the American public to watch him.
I wouldnt worry about him. Keeps the crazy people occupied for a little while.

It is lo laughable that it is very sad that my radio guys are accusing Beck plotting of EXACTLY what you say he is accusing the [list] of plotting. According to them, he is one of what according to you he is fighting.
I wonder what he is REALLY saying. Anybody actually listening TO HIM?
I think he was that at one time... a passonate (even vulnerable) voice of conservatism who functioned as a less hateful version of Rush. I rarely agreed with him but found him oddly likable.
But the moment the Dems nominated Obama seems to be the moment he came unglued.
When I saw him rabbiting on about how "This president HATES all White culture!" he made himself look like either (a) an idiot, (b) Insane, (c) a racist, (d) some combination of the above, or (e) a cynic exploiting the idiocy, insanity, and racism of his listeners. Any of A through E would be reprehensible.

As far as I have heard (just catching his show a few times a month when I'm bored and reading two of his books), he's a guy who loves his country and wants some kind of revolution. Yes, he goes a little too far with the conspiracies. I never take it seriously. No educated person would. He has weird chalk board drawings showing how things are connected to other things. He's stretching, but it's easy enough to roll your eyes at.
Then he says some nice things like encouraging churches and other religious organizations to get out there and help the needy of the nation. He has good family values. I appreciate his dedication to his family and hope if anyone listens to anything he says, it's his message of family values. He's pro-small business. I like that too.
We depart ways when he pushes for a Christian nation. I am happy having my church and state very, very separate.

I thought he was interesting back when he was on CNN, but when went to FOX he just went nuts and became the proverbial "chicken little" of pundits. What little respect I had for him soon vanished.
As for the topic, well if you search hard enough, you'll still find people more extreme than Beck. Thankfully such people are still a minority. We have enough extreme radicals on both sides to last us a long time already.

I hate to break it to you, but if you do your research (and I don't mean NYT, MSNBC, Moveon.org, etc), you will find that Beck can back up what he is saying.
Also his statement on Obama could be backed up too.
Why did the Obama Justice Department dismiss a case concerning voter intimidation involving the New Black Panthers after the case had already been won?
