Is circumsicion mutilation? Yes, a tradition steeped in religion, but we still accept it as a desirable practice, never stopping to think we are hacking off part of our childs reproductive parts.

To me the whole thing shows how influential culture really is. It puts a whole new light on violent video games, violence on TV, Pornography, the Information age, etc. We are deluding ourselves to think our subconcious mind understands that these things we indulge in are not real and do not influence our behavior.

For instance how many young teen girls would be committing suicide over their weight in a Rubenesque culture. I doubt this is much of a problem in an Islamic culture. The consequence can be the same as the result of the cultural beliefs in Islam. Information of all kinds leads to behavioral actions, good and bad.

The internet has an effect on this that can never be measured or imagined. It makes it hard to really know what a successful strategy in life is. Was the censorship of the fifties and sixties a good thing? Do people in some countries that censor the internet and TV see a problem that we can't? Culture can be a very dangerous thing; does it need some level of control? Will behavioral chaos be the end result? Whatever one's opinion is; it is too late to stop it now. The genie is out of the bottle.

Culture is a double edged sword. Individuality blunts both edges.

Circumcision made sense back then when hygiene wasn't as good back then but nowadays it's just pointless. Tradition per se is pointless. Yes, if it ain't broke don't fix it but once we realize it is obsolete that's when it becomes broke.

Tradition exceeds the boundry of logic. Emotion can have a greater influence on tradition and behavior. The results of culture and tradition presents evidence for this.

Unfortunately, this incident is going to be used by the far right, who have made much hay with their Anti-Islamic bigotry, to further their paranoid fantasy that Shariah law is coming to America.

Small minded crap is bad on all sides. Anyone who uses this as a justification to hate muslims is full of it as well. Seriously, Shariah law, honor killings, female circumcision, etc. hurt muslims more than anyone else. I mean, for every extremist sympathizer who immigrates to the west there are fifty others who come to get away from that crap.
