There's flooding around the areas here...not so cheery so far.

I remember when I was at Catholic school, you'd get the ash dabbed on your heads, since every Wednesday morning we went to Mass. It was supposed to look like a cross but instead looked like a bindi (or, as the racist kids at school would say, a 'P*ki dot'; it was that kind of Catholic school :( ). The teachers said it was more holy to try and keep the ash dot on as long as possible. I said, 'why would God care about a bit of ash?' and wiped it off.

The priest would say 'ashes to ashes, dust to dust, you shall return' when he dabbed your head. I know it's in the Bible, but I was constantly taught that I'd live forever in Church. The teachers told me to think about what the priest said. I just thought it contradicted the life eternal they kept mentioning. I know now they mean 'you are dirt without God', which is a nice thing to say to kids. I've grown up to be happy being just dust.

I got my Lent started off with a bang today by donating blood at the Red Cross.

Yes, I will be attending Ash Wednesday Mass later on.

I'm a Lutheran, but we celebrated Ash Wednesday, right down to our pastor drawing a cross on each of our foreheads. When it came to my five year old daughter's turn, she shouted, "I LOVE IT!" Which elicited smiles from our fellow church members.

I hope everyone has a good season of Lent. This year I am doing positive lent. I will be reading a number of books on Religious Philosophy that I have been putting off.

I forgot to change my shirt before Mass, had to put my jacket back on
during the pastor's homily.
