honor thy father and mother vs kosher a rabinical question
First this is not a bait the theist post.
I am a secular Jew and within the jewish community and my own family
There is an issue of younger generation being more observent than their own parents.
giving us this question
"if you know your mother does not keep kosher how do you tell her to stop trying to feed you?"
or which law comes first honor thy mother or do not boil a kid in its mothers milk?
talk amongst yourselves

As I understand things, honoring one's parents simply means caring for them when they are old. So, no conflict. No law requires us to break another law in order to keep it.

leejosepho: no, according to the Talmud proper observance of this mitzvoh requires a lot more than that.
In general, each of the 613 commandments has a few hundred pages going into excruciating detail on what obligations they require and what a violation of them consists of. Nothing in halachah is that simple and easily interpreted.

I am not Jewish, but I have considered converting to Judaism, and have read a fair amount about Judaism. This sort of topic comes up a lot in books on conversion. How does a convert deal with issues such as kashrut and holidays, when their parents are Christian?
Personally, if I did convert, I would keep kosher. So I would not eat at my mother's house. I would invite her over to my house, or maybe bring food I had cooked to her house, along with plates, utensils etc.
As a person born Jewish with Jewish parents, I think I might feel that keeping kosher, even if my parents weren't, would still be honouring them. After all, I am only Jewish because they are Jewish, I am only following the faith of our Fathers. Keeping kosher has historically been of great importance to the Jews, as a sign of separateness from other religions. And maybe them seeing my increased observance, and happiness in doing this, would encourage them to become increasingly observant themselves. Causing them to become more observant could be seen as greatly honouring them.
Either way, I would not want to dishonour my parents, but I feel there would have to be ways to deal with this situation which would ensure keeping kosher, and honouring them.

I understand, but "honor your parents" does not mean we must be people-pleasers and knowingly/willingly violate something like eating Kosher just because "Pop" happens to like pork bacon and "Mom" presumes to scold us for not joining in and thereby allegedly "making 'Pop' look bad" or whatever. I think Henbane has said it well:
It is an error to believe Torah living includes inherent conflicts, and I have yet to find even any law of man actually requiring me to violate Torah.

If the question was the 5th commandment or the Word of Wisdom. I'll be liable of being a hypocrite as a Mormon on both accounts.
Ok looking at it both from chronological & reverse chronological in the OT it would have to be the 5th commandment as its referred in Exodus 20 & Deuteronomy 5.
Edit Assuming Exodus 34:26 is the only OT reference on Kashrut to base our discussion then my chronological view would be so however I'm aware of other references on Kashrut in Leviticus and Deuteronomy what would render it not.

no its ok to ask. personal I buy my own trimisu.
she wouldn't let me break the word of wisdom in here own home, ig wouldn't buy coffee or tea & makes me smoke in her back yard. tho about trimisu I do know of a mormon who clams to keep the word of wisdom & at the same eats trimisu.

Yes in my own home am free to drink, smoke, have tea & coffee of my own choice to cos my active mormon family members (& other mormon's) respect that its my home & that I'm the head of the household of the home that I rent.
tho in the company of other church members out of respect I don't.
