One other little factoid:

Most of our prison population is in rural areas that typically vote Republican.

At Census time, the prison population is counted as part of the community where the prison sits.

This brings down per capita income figures dramatically.

So, the communities get tons of goodies from the government (due to the deflated per capita income figures), none of which is shared with the prisoners.

Also, when congressional districts are drawn, the prisoners are counted as residing within the prisons where they reside, while most of the prisoners actually came from the large cities, and very few of them are eligible to vote.

People who did what Rush Limbaugh went to prison in large numbers. But, he's a rich white man, so he doesn't have to go to prison. Prison is for poor people and minorities.

A scape goat for a much larger problem.

Who says that we don't have human sacrifices today?

Scooter Libby didn't have to go to jail. President Bush, who was otherwise proud of his execution record in Texas, said

"I am commuting the portion of Mr. Libby's sentence that required him to spend thirty months in prison. ... My decision to commute his prison sentence leaves in place a harsh punishment for Mr. Libby. The reputation he gained through his years of public service and professional work in the legal community is forever damaged."

Aw...Poor Scooter..

This is very true and probably while we'll never see the decriminalization of drugs or anything else for that matter. We're creating a prison system that is essentially "too big to fail".

Most people I've met who've been incarcerated were there because they did something stupid.

For example, returning from buying drugs in a car with expired tags and burnt out light, and making a turn without signaling, when they really should have been meeting with their probation officer that moment due to a previous act of stupidity.

That being said, most individuals I've known who have been incarcerated have been habitually stupid.

I'm sure there are people who are incarcerated for not so stupid things but they don't constitute the vast majority of the population incarcerated at any given moment.
