Some thoughts...
Does democracy as perceived by the average citizen really exist?
The science of communications has become so advanced and is saturated literally everywhere, and it's only getting more sophisticated. And with the rise of mega corporations interests are becoming less fractured, our choices becoming less diverse, this is why I don't trust politicians or news, but that doesn't make me immune to the bombardment of subliminal messages that I've been subjected to my entire life.

With these concentrated interests does it even matter who we vote for? Or is it all a giant distraction? Divide and conquer. Polarize the unwashed masses. The illusion of choice.

The only hope is to break down the concentrated private power but with the twisted moral codes supporting that power taking root in people's minds it becomes more difficult than ever.

Your observations are accurate, democracy in the age of mass media is a joke, people made more effort to be informed and debated issues as part of their entirely more social lives prior to WWII, unfortunately that was an age of rabid nationalism and extremes.

Never mind all human endeavour is vanity and must come to an end,

The centre cannot hold, mere chaos is loosed upon the world...

In a way, mass communications works against democracy in that fewer people today are even well versed in politics. Their notion of democracy is based on bumper sticker slogans pushed on the people by way of the internet and the countless TV stations, by the very corporate powers who fear real free government. These people swayed by these wolves in sheep's clothing are the ones who have been convinced that compromise -the very thing that has made democracy work from the beginning - is a four lettered word. Rather, they believe you can only succeed in democracy by hammering your opposition into submission - the my way or the highway approach. Unfortunately, it's these enemies of democracy who have used the airwaves and the internet with the most efficiency.
