I was at the hospital, filling in a form today.

Under 'Religion', one of the answers was 'Atheist'.

I mentioned to the woman at reception as I was filling in the form that I never knew atheism was a religion.

Made me smile anyway.

"none of the above" or "Not Applicable" would have sufficed. Not that an atheist cannot act like an adherent to something - but we do not normally count "Communist" or "Arsenal supporter" as religious descriptors.
