Well, in a a recent thread some British Rightwing racist whined about the leftwing being "Pro-Gypsy". While many (including one American rightwing individualist and Ron Paul supporter) were somewhat amused at the sheer anachronism of this being a 21st century issue, I've always known that Europe (for all its virtues) harbours a lot more racism than North America in the very, very modern (1990s onward) era. With the collapse of the Soviet Union parts of Eastern Europe became a cesspool of xenophobic ethnic nationalism and racism, resulting in territorial conflicts and wars. The Romani people are currently a group facing racialized poverty and this is somewhat interesting, both because it seems to mirror cases closer to home (African Americans in the Ghettos of the United States and Aboriginal Canadians on the Reserves of Canada - thought First Nations also have problems in the US as well), it's a stain on Europe's attempt to become a socially compassionate union of nations, and because it'll piss off the Euro-racists.

Cher maitre,

I have lived in the UK, for my sins I have longer than I wanted shared a room with a Frenchman.

Observed Romani and attitudes to them in Britain and the Balkans.

Seriously, "Europe's attempt to become a socially compassionate union of nations"?????

Kind of like George Bush attempting to become a poet?

Have you ever shared a room with a Quebecois? I'd really be interested in contrasting the cultural and socially habits of a "France Frenchmen" and a Quebecois or, perhaps even more interestingly, contrasting them all against a Saint Boniface, MB Francophone and comparing that to a Metis Francophone.

Imo as for back as Victor Hugo, read The Hunchback of Notre Dame & you'll see why

Philologos have you forgoten that the French repatriated Roma people last year?

Nicolas Sarkozy is a grade A scumbag and moral degenerate. French racism never ceases to amaze me.

cdfox:

Did not know that, not surprised. The French guy I was compelled by regrettable circumstances to share with was THE top racist I ever met, and that includes a really ugly Scots New Zealander.

Overall - and NOT being a racist I do not assume all the French are equally unbearable, any Francophone reading this I will take you totally on your individual merits - my experience of the French is their average level of national conceit / bigotry beats even the English. Bigot is after all a French word.

Me, a Ron Paul supporter? I don't know who he is, though I don't take much interest in American politics. I probably would largely agree with him, though, in many respects. Transparency, open government and constitutional liberties are not dirty words - they are what the left once fought for but many have long since disavowed, to their shame.

And what's wrong with being a "rightwing individualist"? Does the racism insult not stick?

I take it you've never looked at the Third World countries then, where gays and minorities are frequently stoned to death.

We do have problems here in Britain (though I think a definition of bigotry would be helpful at this juncture) but would you rather have one of those societies instead?

The problem with the Irish traveller issue in the UK is that there is a large correlation between them turning up in a village or peaceful town and a massive increase in crime. As soon as they leave, the crime rate falls again.

I find it amazing what the multiculturalist left will tolerate under the banner of "someone else's culture". Many Muslims support the stoning of gays: I don't see the left criticising them for their beliefs too loudly. I wonder why that is?

And as for Sarkozy, I don't have much to say about him. He's a europhile and not especially liberal in tone, either.

Don't agree with him banning the burqa either - much more effective to discourage it and promote integration than banning it.

Master Pedant:

The closest I have come to sharing with a French Canadian is my wife's family, Quebecois and in fact Metis, moved to Upper Michigan about 1850. All of my close contact with Canadians is in Ontario or BC. I have met a few Quebecois professionally - mostly like New Yorkers - and been in Montreal a few times.

Most of what I know about them is media or word of mouth - giving me the impression there is an element of French wannabe in some. But you likely have more consistent sources than I.

Not to be mosy, but 'satiable curtiosity - any Reaume or Prevost in your Metis component?

I read this book where after the Student Riots, there was a large amount of anti-Semitism due to needing a scapegoat for troubled times. So much so that in THREE DIFFERENT YEARS Jewish stores ware ransacked because of possible white slavery.

I would also point out that these people thought it would be a good message to the establishment by getting Le Pen as far as he did one election. I believe it was for PM against Chirac...

Sarkozy is also a pervert:

Jesus Christ, you have difficulties with critical reading. The statement said that a rightwing individualist and Ron Paul supporter was AMUSED at how ABSURD the whole "controversy" was, so I definitely wasn't refering to you. I was rerfering to American right-libertarian Jacoby, and the adjectives were purely descriptive rather than condemnatory.

  • We're talking about Romani people, not Muslims (although there is a small overlap between the two groups).
  • Okay, despite all you're "I'M NOT A RACIST, I'M NOT A RACIST, I VOTE UKIP NOT BNP" screaming, you definitely are a xenophobe. Bringing on the human rights abuses of theocratic and dictatorial Muslim countries and then coming up with the strawman that the centre-left either supports that or doesn't care is the trademark Trojan Horse of a bigot trying to draw large conclusions about immigration.

False dichotomy. I, for one, would rather live in Canada - where even with a subpar stance on refugees, the CONSERVATIVE GOVERNMENT is forced to praise multiculturalism and court the votes of new Canadians to stay in power.

  • This is ironic, because Irish travellers immigrated to the United States and were subject to criticism similar to yours (showing, despite your proclivity to whine about people being stuck in an "imperial time warp", that it is in fact you who is stuck in time) and had children who now say the same things about Mexicans.
  • Regardless, I'd like to see the data and studies attributing a causal connection. The solution to this problem isn't mass deportation, it's economic development and social equality.

That's because you are a wilful ignoramus.

  • Liberal Muslim groups like the Canadian Muslim Congress and British Muslims for Secular Democracy have opposed Islamic conservatives.
  • Various Human Rights Organizations, which (while non-partisan) are staffed by quite a few centre-left activists, regularly decry the abuses of Middle Eastern Regimes.
  • Many leftwing atheists regularly decry Islamic fundamentalism and PZ Myers has even defiled a Qu'ran.

Bollocks!! I think theres some BS in that, as you need to factor what type of crime, are the travellers victims of crime, plus the "Get off my land!" & "not in my backyard!" attitudes of the locals. Also the statistics only take into account reported crime.

Do you think the British tendency to form enclaves in the Costa del Sol is acceptable, Master_Pedant? Just as a wee thought experiment.

I am out of the blue reminded of a long obliterated one shot date-like interchange [hard to be accurate] with a very nice Englaenderin. The conversation turning to persons of color, she came out with the "driving down property values" thing. Raised in American academia, I had always assumed that line was a literary convention, not real life. After a pleasant chat of about three hours all told we parted amicably.

Brits should be allowed to live there in enclaves, though I'd prefer a bit more integration (but not assimilation). If you're refering to fleeing British Gangsters, than they should be charged under the law and convicted if the evidence documents it.
