Adolf Hitler was Lucky
...that he was born a Germanic boy in the late 1880's, instead of in the early 1920's.
I can only imagine that if he were labeled some sort of "social miscreant" during his days as a schoolboy in the Third-Reich, the good people of the T-4 program might conceiveably have taken the adolescent Hitler and zapped his little gonads..... They could have fried his little huevos, so that there would be no future ugly little swarthy incorrigible Hitlers with dark hair.
If he were homeless or futilely pursuing art during the war, and he was drafted into some satanic-munitions factory, I doubt the overseers would have been too pleased if Hitler quit the assembly lines to go paint postcards or give soapbox-rabble-rousing speeches during work-hours. They would have had little patience for that sort of thing and sent him off to Dachau.
Its conceiveable that Hitler's natural internal rebellion could have taken him somewhere to the diametric-left of what the Third Reich was.
With the extreme circumstances prevailing in Germany in the early 1930's, its too probable that some extreme government would have taken power to fix the situation, with some other ferocious leader. Such a government may well have wanted to liquidate of its 'undesireables," and scapegoats.
How many other similar German youths grew up like Hitler, and had trouble fitting in....... but unfortunately grew up during the 3rd Reich? They would have to go get bullied at Hitler Youth camps and get generally ostracized, and have their social-struggles exposed in the absolutely worst way. Hitler at one of his Hitler Youth camps, seriously??? He would be Gomer Pyle. How many other prospective Hitler-type of boys were just destroyed in that system?
Himmler was the same way...... he was too physically weak to pass officer selection during WWI in Bavaria, but yet his SS schools had some of the most barbaric and strict training regimens in the world. I doubt he could have passed his own selection.
Speaking as well, I wonder what ever happened to Dr. Asperger's "4 lil' professors," who were living in what was the 3rd Reich in Austria in 1944? How did they make out? were they done off with too, or mabye killed in the battle of Vienna? I would be genuinely curious to know how those poor boys ever made out? I can't imagine they had anything close to an idyllic situation that they were growing up in.

I suspect without Hitler's wheeling dealing behind the scenes with Germany's military and industrial elite, Germany very possibly would have gone communist. Who's to say how Hitler would fit in such a political system. And even if a right wing cabal would have seized power in Germany, I suspect it would have been the SA Brown Shirts under Ernst Rohm, and/or the Freicorps, who were renowned as unsophisticated street brawlers and head bashers. So would Hitler have made it as a storm trooper? Who's to say? But I suspect that shrill little would-be-artist/poseur would have gotten on the other right wingers' nerves, till one of them would have just shot him while drinking.
As for Hitler becoming a victim of the SS - well, it should be remembered that the SS was specifically founded by Hitler as his Body Guard Division. It really only rose to prominence when the SS leader Heinrich Himmler gave Hitler the pretext and means of ridding the Nazi party, and the German military of Ernst Rohm and the SA leadership. So no Hitler in power, no SS. No SS, no dead Ernst Rohm.

Austria was not a wonderful place especially since it was taken over bodily by the Reich.
Austria was not as thoroughly bombed as Germany because there was not much war industry in Austria as there was in Germany. Even so, Austrians suffered from the ruin that the Reich brought upon Europe. They were in a miserable state after the war especially under Soviet occupation.

It is completely hypothetical, but the sociological conditions that led to the surge of Nazism were there regardless of the existence of Hitler. It is also likely Hitler was himself a charming puppet (As most political figures are) because he carried a school of thought from certain groups with specific agendas.

I think he was much more than a puppet; but I agree, conditions in Germany would have bred some sort of extreme political movement that would have eventually seized power - as I stated before, either the Communists on the left, or the Freikorps on the right. The question is, would they have been able to last, in order to consolidate power, as Hitler did. And if so, would they have been able - or even want - to cause the vast destruction that the Nazis did.

There have been, and are, and probably will continue to be extreme governments all over the world.
Still, Hitler is generally agreed to have led the MOST extreme government in modern history.
Take him out of the equation, and I don't think anything close to Nazi Germany would have evolved.

What do you think of Stalin's regime. Seven Million kulaks starved to death. And then there were the gulags.

If I'm remembering correctly, there was one German historian, himself a former concentration camp inmate, who had described Stalin as "Hitler, plus Asia."

Austria actually lost territory de jure once it was incorporated into "Greater Germany," as I believe the combination state was called. The Austrian province of South Tyrol was majority German but was conquered by the Italians in 1915. And they never gave it back.
Hitler and Mussolini decided on their own to make this de facto arrangement de jure with Austria or whatever they were in 1939 officially renouncing any claim to the province. They also agreed Germans living there could either emigrate or assimilate as Italians, no other option allowed. And Mussolini's minions were not exactly subtle when enforcing this rule with those Germans who chose to stay behind.
I suppose the weirdest outcome of the whole business is that this is still how the map is drawn today, though there's no suppression of German as a spoken language, etc. If there's another instance of the Allies accepting Nazi drawn borders, I'm not aware of it. And that Austria got smaller, via the deliberate actions of Hitler, when he was running the show.

Actually, towards the end of the war, Hitler shanghaied Mussolini into handing over the South Tyrol, and some other territory that used to be Austro Hungarian back to be annexed the 3rd Reich. This was in 1944 when Mussolini wasn't anything more than Hitler's deputy puppet ruling Northern Italy.
In 1945, I think Hitler actually annexed Venice as well and some of the valleys north of Milan to the Reich. The war ended a couple months later though and all of these border rectifications were voided. Italy actually got back most of its old territory, including Trieste and the Germanic Tyrol, for heping out the Allies in the 2nd half. Italy also got to keep their military instantly after war, send players to the 48 olympics, and was not hamstrung in any real way due to their prior Axis membership. They even got their protectorate back over Somalia until 1951.
I guess the Allies figured that the Italians had suffered enough with the invasion and they wanted to create another middleweight power who could stabilize democracy in south-Europe.
Mussolini was pretty much the Gauleiter of Lombardy in 1944, but Hitler forced on him a shameful reannexation of the Tyrol and some other territory. The plan at first had been to resettle German Tyroleans in the Crimea, but that obviously wasn't goin to happen.
I actually disagree. I think the Nazi Party was the result of events in Germany and that Hitler merely filled the role of their leader. Something similar likely would have popped up.

There were certainly other Antisemitic, reactionary groups in post WWI Germany, the best known before the Nazis being the Freikorps. Who knows, maybe Germany would have been taken over by them, or by extremists on the left - namely the communists. But the question is, could they have kept in power. When Hitler first took the reins in Germany, his position of power was hardly secure, until he sacrificed the left wing of his party, the SA. This included executing it's leadership such as Ernst Rohm in order to satisfy the German military establishment, who feared - justifiably - that Rohm had been planning to turn the SA Brown Shirts into the regular German army. As the army had been the silent partner in ruling, since the days of Prussia, Hitler needed to brown nose the military elite to keep power. I seriously doubt that anyone else in 1930's Germany who could have made such backroom deals to achieve power, which included murdering his old chums, as Hitler did.
