By this, I mean the entire ad hominem bullying garbage. It adds nothing except for hostility to a conversation or debate. Calling people "turds" or saying they are "a disgrace" or "bad publicity" or anything else of the sort is nothing more than mere thuggery and it should not be here.

Exactly! I wish people would realize that making fun of/ bullying someone just makes them the smaller person.

Whenever I read a post where someone's being called names, I immediately stand up for that person and order the bully to cease and desist immediately. But I never read the PPR forum, which I suppose is where most of this happens.

Sadly, it probably is.

Reading the wp.net subforum I often hear of it happening in the Haven, but I don't go there so I wouldn't know. Lately here though the bullying has started up yet again.

The Haven supposed to be a place to go for comfort...

I apologize for name calling. I don't intend to be a bully.

I lashed out because I get sick of hearing how climatologists are all brainless environmental zealots, untrustworthy, fraudulent, liars, data forgers, etc... I know this is just slander because I have worked in the field. I don't care if skeptics think climatologists are biased. All humans, including scientists, are capable of being biased and coming to the wrong conclusions. But I still think it is low down and dirty politics to start saying climatologists are intentionally disingenuous without any evidence and I'm not going to change my opinion on that.

Yes people really need to stop obstructing debates with this type of juvenile crap. Lately PPR's been full of personal attacks and smears.

i agree, personal attacks have no place in a civil discussion.

Yeah, but ya know what, 'keet? It might bother SOME people, and I'm cool with cleaning house if that's how the majority of WP PPR feels. You know, "sticks an' stones." But really, I think some less mature users just don't know the ropes yet and are just imitating what they mistakenly perceive to happen elsewhere. Take someone like AG--you really do have to go to pretty great lengths to garner his ridicule. Even Sand will "play nice" as long as everyone else does. I may disagree with them on certain issues, but I've never experienced a rapid deterioration into name-calling and faulty logic with them and others.

My post just prior to this one was intended to point out the mistakes someone made and answer the errors made. I didn't OWE it to the guy to help or respond. I don't think he necessarily deserved any further help or attention. I'm just holding out the last olive branch I have. If any further serious discussion is hopeless, then I'll just ignore further posts entirely. Heck, it wouldn't be the first time! For me, that is a remote boundary for someone to try to cross, and I think it takes a special kind of SICK to really offend me.

Do what you feel is right, of course. I think of ad homs as a de facto admission that the person using them realizes they've just been pwned. Makes me feel a little bit better about myself, and I get to throw a little one of these in just for fun:

Didn't you questioned the term "bullying" before?

Anyway, I haven't noticed.......... oh yeah, against you mostly, it seems.

I'm in favour of people expressing themselves honestly. If you think somebody is a 'turd' or 'disgrace', and you want to voice that feeling, go ahead.

By their very presence they negate civil discussion.

If I think someone is disgraceful I don't think saying so is wrong. But calling people derogatory words like 'turd' 'jerk' 'idiot' 'ret*d' or 'a**hole' shouldn't be accepted. I want to apologise to iamnotaparakeet for that and ask other people not to defend it.

That's quite honorable. Sorry that I offended you by associating you with a particular type of environmental activist by not properly qualifying my statements.
