The politics in N. Ireland are so complicated that I think we should just be happy they stopped shooting at each other.

Where is the third option?
3) N.Ireland breaks away from the U.K. and forms the Republic of Ulster (just giving an example, based on an old name for the region), joining the EU as an independent of either the U.K. or Ireland

What about the option wanted by the majority of Irish people that the Republic stays as the Republic and Northern Ireland stays as part of Britain? IE Leave us alone and stop meddling.

The level of racism on this thread is deplorable. If I wasn't so drunk, I'd go beat my wife in anger.

The best solution, is the status quo. Except all the dips**t IRA splinter cells should stop blowing up people so that a different flag flies in the country. It's f*****g dumb. Hopefully the racism dies down up there, there is a huge amount of it in politics; one of the party slogans was "because we don't want them* in"

*the nationalists

Wasn't the idea of the European Union that people in Europe could go and live in any member country they wanted, and that the individual "countries" would become similar to American states?

So, whether Northern Ireland joins the South or stays with UK no longer has any importance.

The whole reason for not merging the North with the Irlsh republic is that the North is majority Protestant. The Protestant majority is steadfastly loyal to the UK and hostile to the Irish Republic.

The Ulster Protestants are actually ethnically Scottish, and not Irish (beyond the British Isles they are known as "scotch Irish").
Ethicity got conflated with religion in later centuries.

The Scottish of Northern Ireland are steadfastly loyal to the UK.
But ironically among the Scottish of Scotland itsself there is a growing sentiment to break AWAY from the United Kingdom!

So- why not give Scotland its independence AND give Scotland suzerinty over Northern Ireland?

The United Kingdom would be reduced to only England and Wales.

The Irish Republic would stay as it is.

And Northern Ireland and Scotland would form the Republic of Greater Scotland, and both would governed from Edinbough Scotland.

I was kidding, hence the second part of the sentence about conforming to an Irish stereotype :). Sorry for dropping the "R" bomb

There are pretty strong economic disincentives too; reunifiying the two provinces would cause the economic damage the re-unification of East and West Germany caused.

The majority of the people on the Island already want an Ireland free from the British terror state, but alas since that isn't enough I guess reunification can only come from the majority in the North wanting it. With the south currently being looted and pillaged by the IMF it wont happen any time soon. Reunification is only possible with a strong south, something which we wont see anytime soon.
